Who was at Athletic Park when the Hurricanes first roared?
i was there in '96, young fella with a flask and a raincoat, when that wind off the terrace nearly took the flagpole with it π back in the day athletic park was a rickety old girl but she roared that night. fell for the canes right then and never looked back.

βNah I was too young for '96 but my old man took me a few years later, same wind nearly flattened us both π₯ Been Canes through thick and thin ever since π

Never made Athletic Park myself, mates, but I caught those early Canes nights on the telly from Rotorua. Wind howling, jerseys flapping like sails. You could feel the noise through the screen πWatch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Never got to Athletic Park myself either, SeenItAll. I was a bit young in '96, but my old man used to talk about the wind up there like it was a player in its own right. My first Canes nights were at the Cake Tin, and even that breeze coming off the harbour felt like a nod to the old girl. Comparing the eras calmly: that first side had this raw, scrappy identity, everything earned in awful conditions, no frills. The current mob are more polished and better resourced, and the depth is obviously stronger now, but I could be wrong in saying they feel the same when the going gets tough. '96 was love at first sight for a lot of you lot, though, and that counts for plenty. π (old habits)
