Remember when Carisbrook shook the night we beat the Crusaders in '99?

i was standing in the old terraces that night in '99 when the crusaders came to town, and i swear the whole brook shook when we scored, you could feel it through your boots. my old man had been going to carisbrook since the fifties and even he said he'd never heard a noise like it. house of pain indeed 😉 anyone else there that night?

  • The smell of the fire drums drifting over the terraces while the fog rolled in off the hill, that's the bit my memory keeps, more than any try. Back in my day you'd freeze solid at the Brook and still think it was the best night of your winter. 😄 Funny, my old fella always said the noise meant nothing unless you felt it in your chest, and that semi roared like nothing since.

  • Fires, fog and boots shaking - that's the '99 thread right there, and I reckon my old man says the same about the noise. If I compare that side with the current lot, I'd say the difference is belief before the whistle. The '99 boys walked onto the Brook expecting to win; this mob are still learning how to close out games they should take. There's a nuance here too, the competition is deeper now, every week is a scrap. But the raw material looks decent to me: some real youth coming through, and when the crowd actually gets behind them at Forsyth Barr, you can hear the lift. Not '99 yet, could be wrong of course, but give them a couple of seasons and a home semi and who knows. Either way, nights like the Brook in winter are what we're all chasing again, eh. 📊
Do the math before you argue.

  • Terraces through the boots is exactly how I remember it too, though I was only a young fella perched on my dad's shoulders up the north stand. What I'd push back on slightly, Chris - belief before the whistle? I'd say the '99 crowd made the belief during the match. That roar every time they got behind Crusaders was worth a man extra on the park. I could be wrong, but you don't get noise like that from a side expecting to win; you get it from 20-odd thousand who can't quite believe what they're watching. And UnderdogNightmare, your old man since the fifties saying loudest he'd ever heard, that's the detail that gets me. My uncle reckons the fog that night swallowed half the field and nobody cared, we were cheering the grey blobs. Be keen to hear if anyone else's old dear or grandad has a Carisbrook yarn that tops '99? 🔥

  • Nick's got it right. Belief mid-match beats any pre-whistle sermon. I was up the south stand and the noise genuinely fed the team. Show me the numbers behind "belief before the whistle" and I might listen.

@Chur_Kiwi ha, that fog down at the brook was something else. I remember standing there watching the far touchline disappear entirely, old school ground had its own weather 😄
    Seen it all, lads.

@NickUltra you hit the nail on the head. Our lot never make it easy for anyone, and that crowd energy was something else. We felt it the whole time, pure goosebumps man. It’s mad how much the support matters, isn't it? Seriously, we were backed all day and it shows in every single thing we do. 🤯 It reminds us why we push so hard, nah? 🔥🏉
    One love, one side ❤️
