Moana Pasifika
i remember that first haka at mount smart like it was yesterday, and i'm old enough to have watched test rugby since the amateur days, so that's saying something. the ground was fairly chocka that night and you could feel something new being born. but that rainy evening in 2022, the whole south stand belting out the siva tau with the players, water everywhere and nobody caring, mate, i've seen worse weather at forsyth barr and never heard a crowd sound like that. my old man used to say the best things take time to grow roots, and watching moana pasifika these past few years, i reckon he was onto something. from those early nights when we were just hoping to be competitive, to now. You made us believe, family. goosebumps just thinking about it 😄 here's to many more nights like that one.

Chills reading that, family 😭 I was up in the north stand getting absolutely soaked, singing the Siva Tau till my voice gave out, best wet night of my life 🌊❤️

  • that rainy night, aye. i was up the back of the south stand under a leaky old umbrella that gave up halfway through, and i didn't even care. when the whole stand picked up the siva tau and the players turned to face us, my old mate next to me, 70-odd years, watched everything since the amateur days, had tears running down his face, and it wasn't the rain doing it. you couldn't buy that feeling for all the tea in china. the young lot never saw rugby here before that night, so they don't know what a gift you blokes gave us. back in my day you had to pick a side that wasn't really yours. now my grandkids sing for moana and mean it. goosebumps every time i think about it, family ❤️😄

@MatchdayTillIDie that image of your mate who's watched everything since the amateur days standing next to you in the rain is the whole club in one photo honestly. I was on the couch with a cheeky multi on them that night, first-year side + the line, and I'll happily admit the payout meant nothing once that siva tau hit, some things you can't put odds on. Also yes to the newbie's question, they still turn to face the crowd when they're at home, and it's worth getting there early for. Anyone know if the club's doing anything for the anniversary of that first game? Feels like a leg-up day where the whole ground should be singing.
Up one week, down the next. Classic.

  • Funny thing is the two squads feel like different clubs entirely, that first-year side at Mount Smart played like men trying to prove they belonged, this lot walk out like they know the jersey already means something. Both made us proud, just in different ways. The Siva Tau hits the same though, rain or shine ❤️

  • My umbrella that night cost me NZ$12 and it lasted exactly one Siva Tau before it folded like our first-season defence 🤣 spent the rest of the night soaked through singing anyway, zero regrets family. Honestly the rain made it better, everyone huddled in like one big awkward aiga 😂❤️

@RobbedAgain_PTSD NZ$12 for one Siva Tau of cover sounds like a munted punt that never landed 😂 I was watching from the couch with a multi riding on them that night and even soaked through you lot made better noise than my telly. Worth every cent, I'd say.
The line moves — catch it.

Only caught Moana on telly that night, wish I'd been there in the rain 😅 that umbrella lasted one Siva Tau, legend. Do they still do the haka facing the stands at matches?
@Katie88 a NZ$12 umbrella for one Siva Tau, worst value I've seen and I'd still take it 😂 did your multi at least land that night?
