Twenty years on and I still get chills remembering our 2003 boys

twenty years, hard to believe. i was up on the old terraces that night with my brother, spent half my pay on the tickets and didn't regret a cent. still remember the noise when the final whistle went, you couldn't hear yourself think. and that Spencer sidestep in the semi, honestly the young lot never saw anything like it, he just drifted past two defenders like they were training cones. my old man used to say the good times come back round if you wait for them, and nights like that prove him right 😄 who else was there?

Was watching on the pub telly with my old man, only a kid, we were both up screaming when Spencer stepped through 😱🙌 Twenty years and I still get chills 🔥
Heart with the team, head on pause.

  • the noise when spencer went through, i'll never forget it. i'd flown up from Dunedin for the semi, cost me a small fortune in those days but no regrets at all. remember my mate next to me just grabbing my arm and going silent, whole terrace went quiet for a beat, then just erupted. back in my day at eden park the old terraces had a feeling you can't buy now, everyone squashed together like sardines and loving it 😄 twenty years on and my heart still skips a bit when i see the highlights. where does the time go eh

  • Interesting how this thread got me thinking about the current crop. I could be wrong, but that 2003 side just had a bit more menace in the midfield when the game tightened up. The younger lads now are fitter and faster, sure, but I'd back Spencer and co to close out a semi with ten to go. Different eras, different pressures, still proud of both kits though. 📊
Do the math before you argue.

  • I was 10 that night, burnt a hole in the couch jumping up when Spencer stepped through. Old man made me pay for it out of my pocket money 🤣😂
    Memes are analysis too.

@JoshDiehard that Spencer break still lives rent-free in my head too. I was a bit older than you at the time but the pub I was in went from dead silence to absolute mayhem in about two seconds, same beat UnderdogNightmare described from the terrace. Funny how a single step off the left foot can carry twenty years of weight. FrontRowFan makes a fair point about closing out tight games and I'd nuance it slightly: that 2003 side closed because they had three or four blokes who'd already lost big knockout matches and hated the feeling. The current midfield has arguably more raw skill per position, but fewer scars. Sample size caveat though, one great semi doesn't make a decade, and recency colourises memory. Still, I'd back Spencer with ten to go over most of what's worn the jersey since, purely off the tape. 📊
