Word from a mate who knows someone down in Christchurch is that a certain midfield general isn't exactly loving life there anymore, and if we could stump up somewhere around NZ$600k he'd have a proper look at coming north. Nothing signed, nothing even close - just chatter, but imagine him running off Barrett at Sky Stadium with a derbie crowd losing their minds. I'd sell a kidney for that.

Before anyone remortgages the house for that NZ$600k, worth checking what we'd actually be buying. If this bloke is the age I suspect he is, we're talking a 30-plus midfielder on a big ticket for our most injury-prone position, the point-per-dollar there looks ordinary to me. I keep my own numbers on our midfield defence, and the leak has been more about the inside channel and slow second-man cover than raw talent at 12 or 13. Small sample though, five or six rounds, so take that with a grain of salt. Compare his tackle-efficiency figures against what our current pair have managed and the gap isn't as huge as the try-conceded column suggests. There's a nuance here: you can spend NZ$600k fixing a defensive system problem with one expensive body, or spend half that on a young provincial centre and coach the structure. One of those options still leaves money for a loosie, and frankly I know which table I'd rather update come round ten.
