Wallabies arrive at Twickenham on 8 November with one win in three

England — Australia
makes you chuckle a bit, all this talk of the wallabies being a bledisloe threat in waiting. back in the day we'd judge a touring side by who they'd actually knocked over, not by promising signs. one win in three, sitting on 8 points behind england's 10, and the one thing missing from the argument is right there in the ledger, they haven't beaten anyone above them yet. that said, i've seen worse wallaby sides turn up at twickenham and ruin someone's spring, so i won't write them off entirely. 8 november will tell us plenty; if they can't get past england, all that "threat in waiting" talk goes back in the drawer till next year. and us all blacks fans get our look at twickenham a fortnight later, which is the one i'm circling on the calendar anyway. ah well, we'll see 😄

Metric_nerd hit it, remember watching the Wallabies talk themselves up before a Twickenham trip years back and getting rolled, promises don't win tests 😅 One win from three, 8 points, and zero scalps above them on the table. Threat in waiting? Waiting for what exactly 🤬🙌

  • 🤡 Conservative take right here. Wait for the fanboys to pile in saying "but the wins, they only lost two" - yeah, to sides above them, genius. I put NZ$50 on the Wallabies in waiting every year and it's basically a donation to the TAB at this point. Threat in waiting = lottery ticket, not sport 😏

  • Metric_nerd's got the right of it, and the table backs him up more than people realise. Two losses from three, 8 points, goal difference of +29 against England's +48. Wallabies haven't just been losing, they've been getting outscored at nearly two to one per game by comparison. There's a nuance here though: 8 points means bonus points, so those defeats were probably close-ish ones. Close losses to good sides is how a "threat in waiting" narrative gets built, and the tape usually shows a side that competes for 60 minutes then falls off. My caveat: three matches is a tiny sample, and November is a different beast from the Rugby Championship. If they beat England on the 8th, suddenly that table position looks like sandbagging rather than mediocrity. Until then, they're 3rd on 8 points with zero wins over anyone above them. I'd want at least that Twickenham result before moving them up my own sheet.

  • Been watching the Wallabies since the days you could get a pie and a spot on the terraces for a fiver, and the one thing the good sides always had was a habit of winning the ones they weren't meant to. Wallabies haven't done that once this campaign - every point on the table came from beating someone below them. Twickenham on the 8th is their chance to change the story, and until they take it, threat in waiting is just a nice way of saying might-be 😉
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • Half of you tipping England like the game's already played, no one's run out at Twickenham yet, lads. Sure thing, mate, a table in November decides nothing 😏

  • chloe's got a point though, a table in november has never decided a twickenham fixture 😄 but here's my worry as an all blacks fan: we keep being told the wallabies are two years away from something, same as we were told in the 90s. back in my day we used to say a side is what its results say it is, full stop. one win, two losses, and every one of those was against sides sitting level or above them. No upset on the ledger anywhere. what i'd add is this: england at home on the 8th is exactly the sort of game australia used to steal when they had a bit of mongrel about them. if they can't pinch that one, then the "threat in waiting" tag can wait another year as far as i'm concerned. seen worse sides talk themselves up, mind. seen it all before, and usually by boxing day the waiting's still going on 😉

  • Two years away has been the line since the 90s, and the table's never once paid my TAB slip 😂 I'll worry when they beat someone above them, till then it's hope, not form.
    It's a lottery, not sport.

  • The old wallabies sides built their reputations on winning games they weren't meant to, young fellas - this mob hasn't done that once this season. Show me a scalp first.
    Seen it all, lads.

  • Funny how the "threat in waiting" mob never mention they've lost two of three 😂 wait for the fanboys to pile in when they pinch Twickenham 🤡

  • young lot keep forgetting form comes and goes, but a scrum that holds up at twickenham in november rain travels anywhere 😄 i'll back the wallabies getting closer before backing them winning.

  • Closer than winning? Bet the house on that 😏 they've got 8 points off ONE win, mate. Pinch Twickenham and I'll eat my TAB slip 🤡💸

  • Saw that TAB slip comment and had a chuckle 😄 back in the day a touring side earned its scare at Twickenham, not before it. I'll give the young fellas this much: eight points off one win means they're close-ish, but close wins nothing in November. The 8th's match will tell us more than all this chin-stroking, and if they can't handle England, then the All Blacks on the 21st have nothing to fear. Seen worse, sure. But threat in waiting? Waiting's the right word. 😉
Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Does eight points really equate to being "close-ish" when discussing a major tour, or is that merely narrative comfort? If you feel the young lot are serious contenders, what specifically about their defensive metrics or attacking efficiency separates them from the teams that have historically suffered predictable defeats in November? I’ll believe the trajectory is set when I see the actual statistical trends holding up under pressure, not just the points tally.
