Otago away: which Auckland side turns up on 1 October?
FINALLY the big one is nearly here π€π₯ Auckland away to Otago in Dunedin on the 1st and I've had this circled on my calendar for weeks.
Honestly no clue which Auckland side rocks up tho π€― the one that ground out Tasman 24-22 and put 43 on Counties Manukau? insane. Or the mob that let Manawatu score FORTY at home?! at Western Springs of all places, bro, that was hard to watch πβ
I'm backing them all day anyway, always do through thick and thin. Gonna be a cracker under the roof, can't wait π ah well, nowt to do but show up and roar em on π

βThat 34-40 at home to Manawatu still gives me nightmares π€¬ honestly if that Auckland pack shows up in Dunedin they'll get chewed up, Carisbrook-style atmosphere down there and Otago will smell blood. But the Tasman win had real steel, held on when it counted πͺ rolling the dice on the good one turning up, already stacked it into my weekend multi at the TAB, ah well, nowt to do π₯You don't abandon your own.

Bookies have this one tight, which tells you they're as confused as us π I'm eyeing the line more than the head-to-head. If Otago are only giving a few points at home, take Auckland plus the line and don't look back. That Tasman win was proper away grit, 24-22 down there means they can grind. The Manawatu 34-40 stinker worries me less on the road, weird as that sounds. Wouldn't touch the straight win at short odds though. My play: Auckland +line at around the $1.90 mark, keep it small, NZ$20-30 on it and add an odd try scorer if the team list looks full strength. If they show up like they did against Taranaki (12-28, yuck), it didn't land and I move on. Value's in the margin, not the winner πΈThe line moves β catch it.

Funny how everyone remembers the Manawatu game and forgets the Taranaki trip. 12-28 away on 3 September, nobody mentions that one π€‘ Two bad losses in the same month but sure, the Tasman grind cancels it all out, apparently. And SupporterFan, mate, "plus the line and don't look back" is exactly what my TAB account heard before that Manawatu home game emptied my wallet πΈ The line's tight because even the bookies watched them cough up 40 at Western Springs. I'll throw a lazy NZ$20 on Auckland if the price drifts, but I'm not calling it a bank. Sure thing, mate π

Jack's got a fair point about Taranaki, I'll give him that. Back in my day the young fellas at Eden Park used to say you can tell a team by its worst game, not its best, and that 12-28 up north worries me more than Manawatu honestly. Still, that Tasman grind in the last minute of winter air counts for something too, so Dunedin will tell us which lot actually lives in the jersey πWatch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Everyone raving about the Tasman grit but that was three days after getting done at home by Manawatu π Win sometimes hides the wobble, sure thing, mate.

agree with SeenItAll there, the Taranaki one bothers me more than the Manawatu mess too. watched enough footy since the amateur days to know a team that gets flat up north usually finds a way to go flat again in Dunedin. old school rule, defence travels, glamour doesn't. Chur_Kiwi's avocado joke made me laugh though π ah well, we'll seeSeen it all, lads.

Old rule about defence travelling, eh? Funny then that Metric still wants to back the lot of them π€‘ I put a lazy NZ$10 on Auckland at the TAB mostly because you clowns keep talking yourselves into them, which is basically a sell signal. Counted Manawatu putting 40 on them at home and Tasman scoring 22 away, so my multi says Otago by plenty, chur ππΈAny stat can be bent.

Ha, funny thing is I'll actually be at the game, ten minutes down the road from Carisbrook memories. Metric's old rule about defence travelling rings true to me, seen enough northern sides arrive here full of running rugby and leave with nothing. The Taranaki effort worries me more than the Manawatu one too, mind. Getting beaten at home happens to everyone, but going quiet up in New Plymouth tells you something about the headspace. That said, my caveat is Dunedin on the first of October can be cruel to visitors, cold wind off the harbour and all that, and young teams either freeze or fire, no in-between. I'm not brave enough to put money on either lot, though. Watched Auckland long enough to know the side that shows up usually isn't the one you predicted πBeen here longer than some have followed.

Love that half the thread is backing the leaky defence π I'll be at the game in Dunedin, keen to see which Auckland actually turns up π€‘Any stat can be bent.

Back in my day we'd have called this one a coin toss and gone to the pub π which Auckland shows up, even they won't know till kickoff. Dunedin nights humble the flash ones.Remember when the grass was greener π±
