Ireland sit 4th with 10 points yet concede more than they score

Ireland — Fiji
Funny old table this year, Ireland sitting 4th with a goal difference of minus one, and blokes are already calling them frauds. Back in the day I watched sides win ugly all autumn and turn up sharp in November; a home game against winless Fiji looks comfortable on paper, but with Springboks a week later, that trap talk has legs. She'll be right for Ireland though, if they treat it seriously 😉

Trap game tbh, everyone writes Fiji off at 0 points and gets burned 😅 90-91 says Ireland ain't cruising. SA the week after makes it worse 👀

  • A minus-one goal difference and still 4th - that's the funniest table I've seen in ages 😂 Touchline reckons trap game, and sure, Fiji have shipped 145 in three so they're hardly arriving as world beaters, but Ireland leaking 91 themselves? I wouldn't be slapping the rent money on any line there. The blokes calling this a gimme are the same ones who'd tell you a multi with five legs is "basically safe". I'm just asking: if Fiji keep that away form going at the Aviva, what's Ireland's actual plan, hope the boks arrive tired on the 21st? 🤡 Money says closer than everyone expects - I've put a lazy NZ$20 on Fiji keeping it inside the line, purely for the laugh. Remind me of your ROI before you disagree 😏

  • RobBeliever, the goal difference flatters to deceive in both directions if you ask me, 90-91 across three games is a tiny sample, one blowout either way swings it twenty points. Fiji shipping 145 tells you their defence is leaking, sure, but Ireland's 91 conceded says their own line speed has been soft too. Trap game for mine; anyone punting a big line at the TAB should look at how those two metrics nearly cancel out. 📊

  • Trust me, I've seen a winless side turn up angry before. Coached the juniors through a season like that once and they nearly nicked the title ah well, nowt to do. Fiji shipping 145 in three games is grim but those Fijian backs can hurt anyone on their day 😱 anyone punting on Ireland at short odds before the Bokke game is asking for trouble 🔥
    You don't abandon your own.

  • FixIsInPTSD has it right, three games is nowhere near enough sample to read much into 90-91. I could be wrong, but I've kept my own running table for years and one odd bounce of a blowout can wreck the column. Still, my caveat: the trend across all three matches matters more than the raw total, and Ireland conceding at that clip isn't a fluke you just wave off. I learnt that the hard way doing the books on our club side one season, where a tidy-looking points column hid a defence falling apart week after week.

  • chasing points in a comp where you've leaked 91 in three games? nah you cant call that good, you just know Fiji will smell blood 😅 still we'll smash em at home, backing them all day 🇮🇪 wait wrong thread lol but Trap game for sure before the Boks roll in 💀

  • Agree with ChrisDiehard387, I keep my own table too, and 90-91 over three games tells you nearly nothing. Small sample though; that Springboks test will do the real sorting.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • Back in my day we used to say the table only starts telling the truth round about week four, and here we are, Ireland on 10 points with minus one goal difference. Watch as long as I have and you'll get it: that sort of line usually means two grinding wins and one proper hiding, and the hiding wrecks the column for everyone staring at the maths. The Fiji bit worries me more than the numbers, mind. Winless sides with nothing to lose turn up loose and joyful, and that's when the leaks start. Seen worse Ireland teams drop points to sides like that on a wet November evening. I'd call it a trap before I'd call it a gimme, the Boks the following week will do the real sorting, as BadBeatKing says. But I won't write the Fijians off till the final whistle, no sir 😄
Been here longer than some have followed.

Nah @ChrisDiehard387, you gotta stop waiting for week 20 to decide anything. The lack of goals conceded is a massive problem regardless of how many games they've played. 91 points off is mental, man. What else can they really be doing other than haemorrhaging points like that? 🤦‍♂️😱
