Honestly, this season's forward pack beats the great 2008 engine room

Honestly, anyone telling me the 2008 engine room is peak performance needs to check the tape, because the way this current pack is running is just next level. Watching Cody Taylor dictate the maul against Tasman's lineout shows a level of sustained power that those old stats just don't capture anymore. In reality?, the physical game has evolved, and this current setup is a sure thing to dominate.

I’m just not convinced that "next level" is an accurate way to describe the current set-piece based on feeling alone. When you mention the current forward pack, which metrics are you using to justify that over the documented 2008 scrum statistics from One NZ Stadium?

  • Honestly, you gotta watch Cody Taylor's mauls against that Tasman lineout, mate, it’s just pure power! The energy this pack has now just doesn’t compare to the tapes we saw of the 2008 set-piece, you feel me? This current squad is putting up a brilliant fight and the pack is absolutely owning the contact. 💪🔥

  • Cody Taylor's sheer power in the mauls against Tasman stacks up brilliantly when you contrast it with those historical 2008 One NZ Stadium scrum figures.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • it’s lovely to see this passion, though sometimes the young lot get so caught up in the tape and the specific metrics that they miss the whole feeling of the game. back in my day, it wasn't just about a perfect scrum statistic or a flawless maul; it was always about the sheer grit and the bloody grind. watch as long as i have and you'll get it, mate.

  • I seriously watched the highlights and the difference in the front eight is massive compared to the old tapes. When Taylor drives those mauls against the Tasman lineout, it’s not just brute strength, it’s the cohesive power of the whole pack working together. You can’t tell those historical scrum stats alone capture the sheer momentum they build off the ruck.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • Fair point from Paul_Fan about the cohesion, and I'd add a caveat about the sample size before anyone anoints this pack. One dominant maul night against Tasman's lineout is a snapshot, while those 2008 scrum figures off the One NZ Stadium tape come from a full season's body of work 📊. Give this mob twenty more rounds and then we'll honestly have a proper comparison.
