Beauden Barrett at ten is holding back the Chiefs' attack
Say what you like but every Beauden touch is a tempo killer, we went from 80 minute footy to 22 and a box kick π€‘ The kids ran it off nine last season and we looked electric, now it's a lottery, not sport. And in reality, how many more games do we lose slow before Razor's lot just admit it? π

βElectric off nine last season? Source on that, because I remember plenty of aimless tempo too. Beauden's kicking game wins you tight ones, receipts before we hand the keys over.

I was at that electric run off nine, was shouting myself hoarse π€ Beauden's boot keeps us in tight ones but the kids bring the tempo back ah well, nowt to doYou don't abandon your own.

Watched the tape back on this and I could be wrong, but the pattern holds: when the ball goes through nine and the kids call the shots the tempo never drops below second phase, yet every Beauden touch seems to come with a reset β static pod, scan, box kick or wide drift. His kicking game genuinely wins tight ones, no argument from me there, but you can keep that while running the backline off nine and using him as a second playmaker. Depends how you count it, but the touch count alone tells you where our speed went.

fair few of us sat in the terraces through the amateur days and i'll tell you, tempo was never a problem when backs called their own shots. barrett's boot has saved us plenty, no argument there, i've seen worse ten play in a black jersey even π but nick's right about the reset. Every beauden touch slows the ruck and you can feel the crowd go quiet. back in my day the good sides played what was in front of them, no second-guessing. if the kids off nine keep us at second phase like last season, hand them the keys and keep beauden's boot for the last twenty. old saying fits here: you don't fatten the pig on market day. πBeen here longer than some have followed.

Diehard, i've watched tens come and go for half a century now and the good ones speed a side up, they don't hit the brakes every touchSeen it all, lads.

Not convinced the tape proves what Nick thinks it proves, but I'll grant the pattern looks real from the stands too. What I noticed at the last home game: every time we went quick off nine the defensive line was still retreating, and two of those breaks came directly because Beauden hadn't touched it yet. That's the condition I'd put on any change, show me the kids actually hold structure when a derby gets tight, because running free at 60 minutes up is a different job to closing one out. Where the "world class boot" argument wears thin for me is that you can keep the boot without the reset. Halfback takes it, Beauden calls the kick from deeper, tempo survives. Sounds good on paper, so the real question is whether the coaching staff trusts it. If they do, we'll see it in selection well before anyone hands over the keys permanently.Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

Chur, Skeptic, that last paragraph is basically my match notes from the same stand π I went back through my own spreadsheet after the home game, when Beauden took a touch inside our half, our ruck speed fell off badly compared with the quick taps off nine. I could be wrong, but I'd keep the caveat small: his kicking game keeps us out of trouble, so this is a handbrake problem rather than a wholescale dropping of the fella. Context matters, and I'd trial it over a few weeks before cutting him loose.Do the math before you argue.

FrontRowFan with the spreadsheet receipts π anyone putting money on Beauden speeding us up, come see me at the TAB, easy multi.

Nah hold up, one home game and a spreadsheet proves the whole thing? Barretts won test footy at ten for years, mates. π€ Tempo dies cos the pack's going backwards, not one manOn the terraces since I was a kid.

Back in the day at Eden Park we used to grumble the same way about any first five who took an extra step, and half the time the forwards were the ones shovelling slow ball at him. So I get where TouchlineFaithful is coming from β a beaten pack makes any ten look like he's standing in treacle, and I've seen worse sides blame the flyhalf for it. But mate, this feels different to me. Watch the tape from last season when the backline ran everything off nine - the line was still moving forward, the forwards were still clearing, and we looked like a different team. Same pack, same season, just quicker service. I'm 53 and I've watched enough footy to know a ten who slows it down on purpose versus one who's drowning. Beauden's kicking game is still the best in the country, no argument there. But when every touch inside our half turns into a pause while the defence resets, you've got to wonder if the keys should go to the young lot for a few weeks and see what happens.Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Same stand, same observation: every time Beauden takes a touch inside our half the ruck speed drops off a cliff compared to the quick taps off nine. FrontRowFan's spreadsheet just confirms what the eye says.Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

FrontRowFan's sheet agrees with what I scribbled in my notebook at the game, caveat being the forwards were shovelling slow ball in that stretch too. Small sample though πNumbers > vibes.
-
@BadBeatKing how small are we talking, exactly? If the sample's too shaky to separate Barrett's ruck speed from the forwards' shovelling, then neither the sheet nor your notebook actually confirms anything. Source on that split, or is it still gut feeling with a spreadsheet stapled to it?

Source on thaβ¦@GloryDays_4Life nah mate no one's claiming it's proven science, the eye test and the sheet just both lean the same way π you want a source for a bloke's notebook?? π tbh I coached enough junior footy to know slow service kills an attack dead, whether that's on Beauden or the pack we gonna find out over the season, not one stretch π₯You don't abandon your own.

Funnily enough both things can sit side by side, mates, BadBeatKing's notebook and FrontRowFan's sheet point the same way, but the forwards were slow in that stretch too, so Beauden might be a symptom as much as a cause. I could be wrong, but until we see a proper run of games with the kids taking a touch, I'm keeping an open mind on where the tempo actually dies. πDo the math before you argue.

watched him at ten live a couple seasons back and honestly the eye test says a lot tbh. slow ball from the forwards OR fast, Beauden still stands flat and takes an extra beat nobody else takes π₯ that hesitation kills the wide game but yeah GloryDays has a point, you can't split ruck speed from first-five decisioning off one stretch of footy. need a few games of tape before anyone crowns this theory π anyone actually watched the juniors run patterns quicker than that? I have πͺHeart with the team, head on pause.
