Are the refs actually letting Moana Pasifika down?
Don't laugh, but I only started following Super Rugby Pacific properly this season so maybe I'm wrong π
. But 567 points conceded across fourteen games feels like way more than a TMO call or two going against you. Can someone explain simply where the refs are supposedly costing them? Still learning this stuff, thanks in advance π

βyou've got a good eye for it, young fella, 567 against in fourteen games tells its own story, no TMO decision ever cost a side that many points. back in the day we used to say the referee evens out over a season, and he does; the real trouble is a defence that leaks like an old tin roof. ah well, we'll seeSeen it all, lads.

Metric_nerd talking about tin roofs, ha - that defence has more holes than my TAB slip after a bad Saturday π I'll cop to putting a few NZ$ on them early in the season thinking the TMO excuse crowd knew something. Twelve losses later I've learned: a ref misses one call a match, nobody leaks 40 a week from it. Laughable really.Any stat can be bent.

Glad Metric_nerd said it - no referee in the land explains 567 points against. Defence, set piece, discipline; fix those before blaming the TMO.Numbers > vibes.

Sorry if this is daft, but when you say "set piece". Does that mean lineouts and scrums? π Just want to make sure I'm following properly πLearn something new every day.

Good on you for asking, Nick, no daft questions in this game. Yeah, set piece is exactly lineouts and scrums, the restart plays where a team gets the ball back on their own terms. If your scrum gets shunted or your lineout ball's shaky, you're defending from rubbish field position all afternoon, and that's how a season ends up 276 for and 567 against. No TMO in the land fixes a crooked lineout throw πWatch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Thanks SeenItAll_Guy, that clears it up for me too π . Can I ask something though. Even if the TMO did miss a call here or there, wouldn't a team getting 567 points put on them have bigger problems than a whistle? Feels like the ref would have to be on the field for both teams π€New here, soaking it up.

LauraReds just summed up the whole thread in one newbie post π Two wins in fourteen and the fanboys are still hunting through the TMO footage for excuses. Every punter at the TAB would've taken one look at that defensive record and priced Moana at the bottom without a single whistle being blown. Blaming the ref for 567 conceded? Laughable really, mate. Here to argue, not to nod along.
-
This might sound dumb but surely if the TMO was actually robbing them we'd see at least one match where they were hard done by AND still competitive? π You don't ship 567 points through dodgy calls, that's tackling falling apart all over the park. Got it now why Laura said it, cheers to her for putting it so simply πNew here, soaking it up.

Josh mate, you've answered your own question there π If the TMO was truly robbing them blind we'd have seen one close call by now, instead they're conceding nearly 40 a game and sitting on 9 points. I'd love for someone to show me the law book page covering missed tackles, sure thing, bro, I'll wait π€‘πΈ

Quick question from me π , even in my Bunnings NPC club talk everyone blames the ref first, but Josh said it right I reckon. If Moana Pasifika were being genuinely robbed we'd have at least one match where they lost by a few points instead of conceding 567 in fourteen games. Tackling looks like the problem to me, still learning all this so happy to be corrected πDaft questions are my specialty.

Just chiming in to say you all talked me round π 567 conceded says defence, not the TMO. Sorry for the daft question I was going to ask!Learning from the veterans, go easy π
