Back in the day I watched that 2004 final on a crackly telly at a mate's place in Dunedin, and when Mortlock slotted that sideline conversion I spilt my beer down the couch and nobody even cared 😄 the whole room was up screaming. Twenty years on I still chase that buzz, mates. What's your golden-era moment?

Mate I was flatting in Wellington that night, flatmates all half-cut, and when Mortlock stepped up from the touchline everyone just went quiet for a second... then the roof nearly came off 🔥🙌 I've still got the highlight saved on my phone and honestly it gives me chills every single time. That whole era though - Larkham gliding through gaps like he was on ice, Gregan barking orders, the lot. What a side. Chasing that buzz ever since tbh, and I reckon one day we'll get another night like that in Canberra 🏉💪
Heart with the team, head on pause.

  • Back then I was on the road a lot, trucking between Rotorua and Hamilton, and I remember pulling into a service stop that night just to catch the last twenty minutes on the telly in the corner. Full of strangers, all of us yelling at a screen the size of a biscuit tin. When Mortlock lined up that kick from the touchline, even the bloke eating his pie went still. Then the whole place erupted and my cuppa went flying 😄 The funny thing is I don't even remember the score properly, but I remember that silence before the ball left his boot like it was last week. Watch as long as I have and you'll get it - the moments stick, the details fade. That whole side had something special, and blokes like you two clearly lived it too. Good thread, mates, this is what the club's for 😉

  • Watched that 2004 side again last weekend with my old man, and the thing that strikes me is how ruthless they were when the moment came. No panic, just Mortlock walking up cold and nailing it. The current mob have some real talent, especially in the derbies, but they're still learning to kill games off like that vintage did. Different era, fair enough, but you can see the bones of it there. Give them another season or two and I reckon we'll be back chasing buzzes of our own. 📊
    Numbers > vibes.

  • I just started reading this thread and that sounds amazing! It's so impressive how focused they were without messing up 😲.

  • Fair dinkum, BootToBallGuru, "no panic" is doing a lot of work in your retelling 😄 I could be wrong, but from where I was sitting that whole stadium held its breath like a bloke on a tightrope. My favourite golden-era moment is still Mortlock's charge-down assist in the 2004 semi, though the conversion runs a close second 📊 Twenty years and it still gives me chills.

  • My 2004 memory is watching the final at my mate's flat while wearing a jersey that cost me a whole week of takeaway money, and when Mortlock nailed it I jumped up, knocked my drink onto my own lap, and celebrated like an idiot in wet jeans 🤣😭 still reckon that buzz was worth every cent and every soggy sock 😂
    Memes are analysis too.
