Be honest, lads - this Brumbies backline is more hype than tries
Three games, one try out of the centres, and some of you are still talking about the "famous Brumbies running game" like it's 2001 π Hype? It's a lottery at this point, chuck the ball wide, cross fingers, repeat. The coaching setup has got the forwards bashing away all afternoon while the midfield just stands around admiring them.
I'll be honest, I put NZ$10 on the TAB with us scoring outside tries every week, and even the line merchants laughed. Sacked or reworked, something's got to give before we get embarrassed by the Crusaders again π€‘ wasting some seriously quick edges there, lads - whoever's coaching them into invisibility should front up and say so. π

βCould say you're onto something, Supporter_88, on condition that we blame the coaching setup rather than the backline itself. One try from the centres in three games is a bad stat, sure, but I'd want to see the width and quality of ball they're actually getting before writing off the whole running game. Sounds good but the midfield only looks like a lottery when the forwards aren't winning the collision - sort that and the tries come.Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

Nah Robbed is spot on tbh, our lot never make it easy but blaming the centres when the ball's been arriving at second receiver off a slow base all three weeks is rough π€ Give them clean front-foot ball and watch the tries come, heart says it all πͺπ₯In the stands since I was a kid.

Robbed and UncleAllDay have it right imo - one try from the centres in three matches is a shocking return, but a three-game sample tells you more about the service than the finishers. Slow ball at second receiver kills any wide move before it starts; give them front-foot possession and that stat flips fast. Small sample though, so I'm holding judgement until we see a game where the forwards actually win the collision. π

FixIsInPTSD nailed it, I keep my own stats each round, and the centres have barely touched the ball past second receiver. I could be wrong, but service looks the culprit. π

Got a lazy NZ$20 at the TAB on the centres scoring next week, NickDiehard - easy money if the service is really the problem π€‘ Funny how nobody's actually named the passer though, eh? πHere to argue, not to nod along.
-
Took the NZ$20 on the centres next week? Brave punter π name the passer, eh, alright, I'll say it, the service out wide has been slow as treacle and even the best centre in the comp can't finish off a frozen ball. Hard out some of you want to bury the whole running game off three matches, that's a knee-jerk if I ever seen one π That said, one try in three games IS rough, no sugarcoating it. If the ball's still dying at second receiver in a month's time then yeah, coaching has real questions to answer, no dodging that. Give them a couple more rounds, then we riot together π€¬π₯One love, one side β€οΈ

i sat through those grey saturday arvos at loco training ground watching centres starve for a month straight back in my day, so i'm not panicking yet. millie's right though, slow as treacle service kills any running game, even the 2001 mob would've looked munted on that ball. give it a month before we bury the boys. πBeen here longer than some have followed.

Watched the replay of the third game again and what struck me was the first receiver taking an extra step every time before shipping it - that half-beat is all it takes for the defence to drift, so by the time it reaches the centres they're taking the ball standing still with two tacklers lined up. Fix the tempo at 10/12 and the treacle problem half disappears, I reckon. She'll be right once the coaching staff actually drill it.
-
Josh_Legend, spot on about that half-beat - I could be wrong, but the tape backs you. Same drift I clocked on my own table. Nuance: a running flyhalf fixes half of it.Do the math before you argue.
-
Josh, that half-beat theory is why I put NZ$10 on the halves combo next week, if the coach can't fix one step, the lotto continues πHere to argue, not to nod along.
-
One try from the centres and suddenly everyone's a tactics professor eh π Josh I watched the same replay and nah, I'm not buying the half-beat theory on its own - if one step kills your attack, your attacking pod is already munted before that. Where's the support runner off the 12? Where's the loop? This is coaching, plain and simple πͺ And RobbedAgain putting NZ$10 on the halves combo, brave man π I'd rather put my money on the coach growing a spine and picking a running flyhalf. Remember how flat the ABs looked at Eden Park before they fixed the depth of the pass? Same disease. Fix the service, give the centres ball on the front foot, then we'll see if the running game is dead or just being strangled ππ₯

Jack's got a fair point buried in there, but I've seen this movie before. Back in my day we blamed the centres when it was really the service they were getting. Josh's half-beat read rings true to these old eyes; one lazy step at first receiver and the whole drift eats your pods alive, just watch any decent Super Rugby defence do it to us. Ask for loops and support runners all you like, lads, if the ball arrives late and flat-ish standing still, even Mortlock in his prime would've struggled. πWatch as long as I have and you'll get it.
-
Watched the tape twice now and honestly Jack's on to something: a half-beat matters, sure, but when nobody loops or hits the line off 12, even a slick flyhalf is passing into a vacuum. OldSchool's service point sits with that too β depends how you count it, but one try from the centres in three games smells like structure, not finishing. Small sample though, so I'm holding my verdict until we see the next two rounds πNumbers > vibes.

Nah hard out, passing into a vacuum sums it up π€ you just know service has been munted all season, blame the 9 before anyone else πͺYou don't abandon your own.
