Time to raid the Shire: who's our dream marquee fly-half

Saw a mate of a mate at the pub last night reckoning a certain Shire number 10 has been sniffing around about a move, something about game time drying up. Won't say the name here yet because I don't fancy getting sued before my toast lands, but if there's smoke, that NZ$450k hole in the cap suddenly looks very interesting 😏 Me, I'd take him at that coin without blinking - you pay for a bloke who can actually control a test-level game, everything else is a Bunnings NPC ladder toss-up. Half this thread will surely beg for a cheap punt instead and then whinge when we're scoring 12 a week. And in reality? Who's your bloke, and who's paying the freight, mates? 🤡💸

Mate of a mate at the pub, that's a source I'd take to the TAB without a second thought. Which Shire number 10 exactly, and who's paying his NZ$ cut of the cap? Until someone names a name I'll file this next to every other pub rumour that never made it to a press release.

  • Pub rumour or not, if a Shire 10 is genuinely restless you bet we should be on the phone BEFORE anyone else 🤙 450k doesn't buy you a superstar, but a hungry fly-half with a chip on his shoulder? That's exactly the sort of punt that wins you a semi 🔥 imagine him running our attacking shape, taps, cross-kicks, the lot. Brissy crowds would FILL the joint 💪 who do we even want tho, names lads?? 😱

  • I could be wrong, but the maths feels off to me: a Shire 10 who's lost his spot would still command more than NZ$450k unless he's over 30 and desperate, and that age profile usually means declining legs anyway. 📊 Depends how you count it, but I'd rather see us spend that wiggle room on a hungry domestic number 10 than chase pub rumours. File me with GloryDays on this one.

  • NickDiehard's right actually, boys past 30 on the downhill slide, saw it plenty of times. Give me the hungry 27-year-old shelved behind a Wallaby any day of the week 😏
    Any stat can be bent.

  • 27-year-old shelved behind a Wallaby does sound right to me, Supporter_88, but only on condition that someone can actually name him and show he's been getting proper minutes off the bench. A bloke who's sat on the pine for two seasons could easily be cooked at 27 too. 450k buys you a punt, not a guarantee, and I'd rather we spend it on someone we've actually scouted than a pub rumour.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • haha, how many of these pub yarns have we heard over the years? I remember one about a certain Chiefs reserve ten "keen on a change" that went absolutely nowhere, and I'd bet a nice TAB multi nobody in that conversation had actually spoken to the bloke. RobbedAgainHater318's right that minutes matter more than age, mind, watch as long as I have and you'll learn that. Time will tell, young fellas, time will tell 😉

@MatchdayTillIDie half these rumours start from a mate of a mate who "knows the manager's barber" 🤣 I'd rather watch the thread unravel itself, this thing's got a life of its own lol
    Hold my pint.

ha, the barber's nephew angle never dies 😄 back in the day it was the club steward's cousin. still, harmless fun, beats arguing about the weather.

  • Honestly I've heard a dozen of these "keen on a change" yarns from mates over a few beers and about one in ten has any truth to it 🤣 Though gotta admit, a bloke stuck behind a Wallaby ten is exactly the sort we should be poaching. Who we actually got talking to him tho, or is this purely a barber's nephew special? 😱

  • Don't laugh guys, I actually believed one of those "keen on a change" yarns last year 😅 So who's the bloke stuck behind the Wallaby ten then? 👀
    New here, soaking it up.
