From Larkham's drop goal to Canberra's coldest nights

I remember when I drove down from Rotorua in '04 with two mates and a thermos, half the North Island it seemed was heading to that final. Rain came down like the sky had a grudge, and old Canberra Stadium still packed out 47,000 of us who never once thought about leaving early. And then Larkham, cool as anything, puts that drop goal over like he was kicking in the backyard. Back in the day you'd stand there soaked to the bone freezing and be happy about it. That's what makes you for life, eh. My old man used to say the cold nights are the ones you remember. He was right. Who else was there in '04? I know a few of you were 😉

  • I was there that wet night, my old man's scarf soaked through and nobody cared a jot. Larkham just stood back, calm as anything. Magic days, hard out 😄
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • Nice thread. Fair warning from me of all people: small sample though, this current side hasn't earned a place beside the '04 mob yet. Good bones, wrong weather.

  • Mate my old man spent NZ$40 on a poncho in Canberra that weekend and it lasted exactly eleven minutes 😂 watched the rest of the final wearing a garbage bag like every other legend in that crowd, nobody batted an eyelid. Larkham could drop goals in a cyclone but no one could survive the merch tent 🤣 good bones AND good stories from BadBeatKing's mob, weather or no weather 🍿
    Memes are analysis too.

@SeenItAllFaithful even the replay of those Canberra night games feels freezing somehow 😅 dunno if I'd survive a garbage bag though, that's commitment 🙏

Nah @BadBeatKing I reckon you're being too hard on them tbh 🔥 good bones is good bones, and young sides grow quick when the forwards front up like they have been... '04 mob earned it over years, sure, but you gotta start somewhere 💪 cold nights in Canberra never bothered anyone with a proper pack anyway 🙌
    One love, one side ❤️

  • @RobDiehard forwards fronting up is one thing mate, but who's kicking the points when it's 2 degrees and the game's on the line? Young sides grow quick til they choke in a semi, then we find out what the bones are made of. What's your line on them making the top four, just asking like 😏
    Any stat can be bent.
