Honest debate, family: the Drua are more fun to watch than any NZ

Hot take incoming: nobody in NZ actually turns the telly on for the Crusaders anymore, they turn it on for us. Churchill Park with the drums going and the forwards hitting like a cyclone, no side in this comp plays better theatre. Fun? Nobody's close. But here's where I stop being soft on you lot. Every time we board that plane we play like we've left the belief in the checked luggage, and I've had a cheeky few NZ$ on us away just to prove a point and lost every time 🤡💸 Whether it's travel, refs, or the players' own heads, I honestly reckon it's the last one, same fifteen men, same skills, zero spine past the border. Fix that and the title talk gets serious. Until then, calling us premiership material is a sure thing, mate... for everyone betting against us 😏

Theatre doesn't win you anything, Fullback, and deep down you know it. I'll grant you the drums and the hits, but "nobody turns on for the Crusaders" is vibes dressed up as insight, that lot have more titles than we have away wins. Show me the away record fixed first, then talk about the whole comp watching us.

  • Gate, more titles than away wins, yeah alright, but those Crusaders titles came with a fortress crowd and money behind them, we've had FIVE seasons 😤 Away form? I was at that Melbourne trip when we got hammered and the boys still got up off the deck swinging, that fight ain't leaving. Travel's brutal on us, belief will come, and tbh no one switches off when we're on 🔥💪 ah well, nowt to do

  • Gate gets my agreement on this one, and here's the annoying part: he's right for the wrong reason. It isn't theatre versus substance, both live in the same house. The nuance is that our home record at Churchill Park stands up against anyone's fortress, while the away column has been bleeding for five seasons straight. I keep the table every round, and the split is so lopsided it almost reads like a typo. Two different teams wearing the same jersey depending on the flight. So when SeenIt says the fight never left after Melbourne, fair, I was wrecked watching it too. But heart under the posts in a lost cause is not the same as bankable points on the road, and until we fix the travel routine and the belief gap, the Crusaders will keep stacking titles while we stack highlights 📊 Small sample caveats aside, the pattern's too consistent to wave off.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • funny you lot talk about fortresses, i remember the old Bledisloe nights at Eden Park when the visitors basically lost the game walking out of the tunnel. home roar is worth a good eight points in my book, and the Drua get more out of that than anyone i've watched in forty-odd years. so let's not pretend Churchill wins we can't take on the road; watch as long as I have and you'll get it, belief travels slower than a team bus but it does travel 😉
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • amen to that, eight points is probably conservative 😄 home roar like ours is worth a try on its own. ah well, we'll see how the boys go when they land in Dunedin.
    Seen it all, lads.

  • Fair point from UnderdogNightmare. But the roar doesn't fly with the boys. Every away trip means a Nadi connection, a time zone shift and a hotel week. That's a real handicap before kickoff.

    Sample first, conclusions after.

  • FixIsIn_Denier has the logistics half right, the Nadi connection and hotel week are real costs, but I'd add a caveat: the sample of away games against fully rested sides is still small, so I'd hesitate to blame travel alone when the defence alignment falls apart far more often than the flight schedule would explain. I keep my own table every round and the away error count in the second half jumps way past the home one, which smells like composure more than jetlag.

  • Blaming flights when the line speed falls over after twenty minutes is rich 😂 I backed us away at the TAB twice last season, lost both, and neither time was it jet lag that beat us, mate 🤡💸
Here to argue, not to nod along.

  • Sorry GoTheDistanceOrNothing but you backed us at the TAB and lost, so now the flights don't matter?? 😂 one punter's wallet isn't evidence, brother. FixIsInPTSD said it proper. Defence alignment falls apart everywhere, home crowd hides it. You just know if we fix that, the travel excuse gets a lot quieter 🤙🔥

@VeteranSinceKid nah the crowd only hides it for 40 mins bro, we saw them come to town and still throw the ball around like it was a school day 😱 watching from the coach's box with our juniors, that offload stuff teaches itself, defences everywhere look cooked against it tbh 🔥 backing them all day

@LooseheadLoyal "teaches itself" 😂 mate I've put NZ$50 on Drua away wins twice and both multis died in the second half. Teaches itself right up until the legs go, aye? 🤡💸

  • fair enough on the alignment, brother, but you young lot never sat in the 80s rain at Eden Park watching the big sides grind you down — fitness and belief fade away from home, flights or no flights.

  • Belief is a convenient word because nobody can measure it. What I'll grant, with the condition that someone actually tracks it: our defensive line speed drops in the second half away from Lautoka far more than the attack does, and that pattern smells like conditioning and rotation policy, not spirit. Show me the numbers on minutes played by our forwards across the away blocks and I'll take the fatigue argument seriously - until then it's all vibes.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • @RobbedAgainHater318 fair point, that away second-half fade is real and it's killed my multis more than once. I'd back the conditioning theory over refs all day. Legs go first, then the line speed goes with them. If someone actually tracked it across a season I'd happily shape my TAB bets around it 💸
Value over a big price 💸

  • RobbedAgainHater318 has the honest half of it, I reckon, line speed fading away from Lautoka while the attack holds up does point at conditioning and rotations before it points at refs or flights. I could be wrong, but I'd add that home crowd coverage is real: at Churchill Park a slow reload gets masked by the noise and the tempo we impose, away it gets exposed in about three phases. So my ledger so far: conditioning and alignment first, belief second (and VeteranSinceKid is right that it's partly hidden by home comfort), travel a distant third. Where I'd push back on GoTheDistanceOrNothing — twenty minutes of falling line speed is exactly what a rotation policy produces, so his TAB losses and my theory aren't actually arguing. Two matches sat in the sun at Churchill Park this weekend might settle nothing, but watch whether the bench forwards get on before the fifty-fifth minute away and tell me the pattern doesn't repeat. 📊
Do the math before you argue.
