Everyone's backing Auckland at Otago

Auckland
That loss to Manawatu at Western Springs was a proper stink - 40 points conceded at home tells you everything about this defence. But I've had a NZ$20 e... NZ$20 multi riding on Auckland's attack all season and it still clears, because they've put up decent numbers in three of their last four. My lean: Auckland to win at Otago but under a double-digit margin. They edged Tasman by two away, got smacked by Taranaki on the road earlier in the month. Away form is shaky. The TAB line will probably be around Auckland -8 to -10 after everyone piles in off the name alone, and that's where I'd fade it. Straight head-to-head? Yes, that lands. The -9.5? No chance I'm touching that after a side that just shipped 34:40 to Manawatu. 💸

Two losses in five, and the attack's quietest games were the away ones, 12 and 24. I could be wrong, but I'd want the Otago line, not the straight win on your multi.

  • Line's the play, I'll give you that much, Chris. But everyone's ignoring Dunedin in late spring. Carisbrook wind's gone but the southerly off the strait still flattens attacking sides, and Auckland's two away games this month were 12 and 24 points for a reason. Reckon under 40.5 total points lands more often than Auckland clearing any multi leg, so I've left them out of mine entirely 💸
Value over a big price 💸

  • Remind me of your ROI, TrueBeliever? That NZ$20 multi was cooked the second Manawatu shipped 40 past you at home. Auckland banker? Sure thing, mate 😏

  • Nobody's mentioned the three-point margins yet, and that's where my head went first. Auckland's wins this month were 43:33 and 24:22, and both games they conceded 30-plus. That's a side winning shootouts, not a side controlling anything. Otago at home doesn't need to win a shootout, they just need to keep scoring at the rate Manawatu and Counties managed, and the away form (12 at Taranaki, 24 at Tasman) suggests Auckland travels thin on attack. I could be wrong, but I'd take Otago straight-up before I'd touch an Auckland line, which is the opposite of the thread consensus. To Gary's point on ROI, fair jab, but the sample is five rounds, which is nothing. My own sheet says Auckland's defence has bled 28+ in three of those five, and defences regress far less than attacks do. Matchday's under call actually fits the same read: if Otago box smart and the points come slow, 40 total is live. Me, I'd rather have Otago plus whatever the market overreacts to after one stink of a home loss. 📊

  • FrontRowFan mate, "winning shootouts" is generous tbh, that Tasman game was two poor sides slopping it out 😅 and Manawatu put 40 on us at Western Springs, at home!! I coached juniors all weekend and even those lads tackle harder. Nah, banker? put your NZ$ on the line, not the win 🔥
    One love, one side ❤️

  • Diehard's got a point about the Tasman game being ugly, but there's a nuance he's missing: Auckland's problem this month hasn't been defence or attack in isolation, it's been consistency across four quarters. Against Counties Manukau they put up 43 and never looked rattled. Against Taranaki they managed 12 all afternoon. Same side, ten days apart. That variance is exactly why I don't touch win markets on the road. So no, Otago on 1 October isn't a banker, I agree with Matchday_88 that the line is where the value sits, and honestly I'd want to see Otago's own recent scoring pattern before going near the under, because one side's away form alone is a small sample though people keep treating it like a season-long trend. If you're staking NZ$ on this, weight it small and shop the margin rather than the result. Auckland away after conceding 40 at home is the classic spot where the market overcorrects in both directions.

  • Locked it in: Otago +line and Auckland on the head-to-head at odds, skipping the straight win, that Manawatu game didn't land for a reason 😭 See you after the match 💸
