Can Manawatu back up that 40-point raid when Canterbury visit?
That 40-pointer in Auckland has me properly curious about Friday at CET Stadium, because the week before they coughed up 36 to Waikato away. I could be wrong, but a defence that leaks like that doesn't just fix itself in six days. Canterbury arrive with two tight-ish wins, Harbour by a single point and Southland by 13, so they're grinding rather than flying. My gut says home crowd gets them close, but I'll take Canterbury by 5 unless the Turbos show me the Auckland defensive effort was real and chocka with intent, not just Auckland being sloppy. 📊

✓I've got a spreadsheet for this sort of thing, so here's what the last three weeks actually say. Manawatu's fortnight is genuinely weird: 36 conceded in Hamilton on the 19th, then 40 put on Auckland six days later. That's a swing you can't read as a trend either way, it's more a team that plays to the tempo the opposition allows. Canterbury's two wins are tighter than they look on paper. Harbour was a one-point scrap (25:24), and Southland at home was comfortable enough at 34:21 but Southland aren't exactly travelling well anywhere at the moment. Chris is right that the Waikato tape is the worry, though I'd add a counterpoint: Auckland also scored 34 in that raid, so Manawatu's defence was leaky there too and they won on sheer possession of a bigger attack. Canterbury away from home have won by a combined margin of about 14 across two games, one of them a nail-biter. Home ground Friday, I'll grudgingly take Manawatu by aFG margin.Do the math before you argue.

canterbury down here always remind me of the old round-robin grind, they rarely stay quiet for long. ah well, we'll see friday.Seen it all, lads.

We pumped Auckland for 40 in their own backyard, why not keep it rolling 🔥 throw everything at Canterbury Friday, GET IN reds! 🏉On the terraces since I was a kid.

Canterbury off two wins, scraped past Harbour by one - I'd take them on the line. 31-24 Cantabs, straight head-to-head in the multi 💸The line moves — catch it.

One-point wins tell you more than forty-point ones, honestly. Canterbury ground out Harbour and Southland in back-to-back weeks, which is the grind you want away from home; Manawatu's Auckland raid came off the back of conceding 36 to Waikato, so their baseline is wobbling. I'll take the Cantabs by around 8-10, roughly 29-21, and I'd sooner trust the defence than hope for a repeat scoring spree. 📊Numbers > vibes.

BadBeat, a one-point grind over Harbour reads as luck to me more than form, scrapes like that don't pay my TAB multi twice. Manawatu put 40 on Auckland then, so why's everyone acting like the Waikato leak defines them? I'll take the home side + whatever points the line gives me Friday, small stake, on and forgotten 💸Value over a big price 💸

Chloe, look at the sequencing rather than the raw scores and the picture changes. Manawatu's 40 in Auckland came a week after shipping 36 to Waikato, so what you've actually got is two road games where they scored plenty and stopped nothing. That's a team whose attack is travelling and whose defence depends on the opponent's accuracy. Canterbury, whatever you think of the Harbour scrape, have now held two sides to 24 and 21 in consecutive weeks. That's a floor, and away wins with a floor are worth more than a ceiling with a trapdoor under it. I could be wrong, but CET Stadium on a Friday night with a short turnaround favours the side that wins the collision and territory battle, and the Cantabs have been winning ugly, which is exactly the skill that travels. Depends how you count the Auckland game too. Some of that was Auckland chasing the game and leaving doors open late.

Nick, sequencing cuts both ways mate. Canterbury needed a last-gasp scrape at Harbour too, so nobody here is defending clean. I priced this at Canterbury -6ish and the line barely moved, which tells me the TAB doesn't trust either of them. 40 in Auckland was great value on the day, but it landed against the worst defence I've seen all season. 33-28 Cantabs, and I'm leaving the try scorer leg off this week 😭Value over a big price 💸

TrueBeliever's TAB observation is the interesting bit for me, because a line that sits still at Canterbury -6 with both camps this noisy usually means the market genuinely can't separate them. My own spreadsheet has Manawatu's Auckland trip as their best attacking sample of the season and also their worst defensive one, 34 conceded six days after 36 in Hamilton is a pattern, small sample though. Canterbury's two wins are the opposite shape: modest scores, tight margins, the kind of away-day grinding that travels. Where I land on merit: Canterbury's floor looks higher, Manawatu's ceiling is wilder, and at CET Stadium the home side has to prove the Waikato leak was a bad night rather than the new baseline. I'd nudge towards the visitors covering, but I wouldn't put real money on any scoreline here until I see who fronts up defensively in the first quarter. Could easily swing either way, and that's half the fun of Friday.
