Beauden Barrett at 10 is a luxury we don't need

Sub-70% off the tee and we're paying superstar coin for it? I put a lazy $20 on the line with the TAB last week and even the bookies know the pack's carrying this mob - every punter I know can see it. Mo'unga used to run the game and nail his kicks; Beauden just flaps around looking busy. Am I mad for wanting the old way back, or are the rest of you just scared to admit it? 😏

"Flaps around looking busy". What does that actually mean in numbers, Gary? Because when I watch the tape, Barrett's still putting players through gaps at a rate nobody else in this squad manages. If the pack is doing the heavy lifting now, I'd remind you the pack did the heavy lifting through every title under Mo'unga as well. That's the Crusaders way by definition: front foot forwards, first five finishing. The formula hasn't changed just because the bloke wearing 10 has a different surname. And the TAB point proves nothing. A punter slapping NZ$20 on a line tells me about the mood of the market, nothing about whether Barrett earns his wage. You want to compare him to Mo'unga? Fine, do it properly: try attempts, line breaks, boot pressure, defensive workload, not just goal-kicking percentage from one sample of a season. Sub-70 off the tee is a fair complaint, I'm not defending that. But "doesn't control the game" is a gut-feeling line dressed up as analysis.

  • Nah Gary, watch the tape properly 😤 Beaudy puts blokes through gaps nobody else here can, kicks will come right 💪 backing him all day 🔥

  • Gary, the sub-70% off the tee is a fair stick to beat him with, no argument from me there. But "flaps around looking busy" doesn't survive the tape. GloryDays is right that he's putting blokes through gaps nobody else in this squad finds, and I could be wrong, but the pack doing the heavy lifting is exactly when you want a 10 who creates instead of just managing. Kicking form comes right; playmaking vision doesn't grow on trees. 📊
Do the math before you argue.

  • Funny thing is, back in my day the Crusaders never needed their 10 to be a superstar to win anything, Mehrtens ran games with a steady boot and a good head, and the pack did the rest. Seen worse goal-kicking slumps than sub-70% too; form off the tee comes and goes, vision doesn't. I'd slow down before we punt a bloke who's still finding gaps nobody else in red and black can 😄
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • UnderdogNightmare nails it - Mehrtens won off steady boots and a sharp head, and I've got his 98 v the Blues on an old VHS somewhere. Caveat: sample's small this season, so I'd give Beaudy till the derbies before judging.

  • Laughable really, "vision" doesn't miss three straight shots at goal while the pack hands him a lead on a plate 😂 Funny how Beaudy's always the brave one when the forwards are already winning.
Here to argue, not to nod along.

  • Kicking percentages bounce around like my SG tables every round; the attacking shape he's built doesn't disappear in one bad month. Judge him after the derbies. 📊
    Numbers > vibes.

  • Nah you can't slate Beaudy off one rough month on the tee 😤 I played behind enough ordinary 10s to know the difference between a kicking slump and a bloke who can't read a game. He sees stuff the rest of us don't. You just know he finds his range again, leave the goal-kicking chirping till after the derbies at least 🔥

  • @RobDiehard that makes sense to me actually 😊 so it's more about reading the game than the tee stats? Still learning the differences here, cheers.
    New here, soaking it up.

@GoTheDistanceOrNothing mate you clearly haven't watched Beaudy run a zone with the forwards going backwards 🤬 Every 10 misses shots, even the greats. Missing three on the trot means nothing tbh, the vision is what wins you derbies. Come back after the derby run and say that with a straight face 🔥
On the terraces since I was a kid.
