Test match rugby feels like a different sport from Super Rugby

Test Matches
I could be wrong, but Test footy does feel like a different sport entirely, the tempo drops, the kicking duels and set-piece grind take over, and a guy who's been untouchable for the Crusaders all winter suddenly looks mortal in a black jersey. That gap between franchise form and Test form is bigger than most of us admit, I reckon.

100% agree tbh. You see blokes look like gods for the Crusaders all winter then get to Test level and the space just vanishes 😱 that grind is where legends get made. Nervous but buzzing for the window, backing the ABs through thick and thin 💪 ah well, nowt to do but watch it unfold 🔥
    You don't abandon your own.

  • Three blokes agreeing with each other isn't proof of anything. Sure, the space shrinks at Test level, on condition that you can show me it's the same players regressing and not just weaker Super Rugby defences flattering them all winter. Otherwise "gods in February, mortal in June" is just a vibe, and vibes are what people use when they can't be bothered checking.

    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • agree with you both, and I'd add the gap's always been there — back in my day the provincial blokes who starred all winter got found out the same way once the Tours rolled round. Eden Park test nights just hit different, always have. funny how some things don't change 😄
Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

  • Rob's got a fair challenge buried in there, actually. The worry I have with the "same blokes regressing" claim is sample size — one November window is three Tests, maybe four, against sides that scramble and contest far harder than a mid-season Super round. That's nowhere near enough tape to call it decline rather than defences doing their job. What I'd trust more is watching how a player's roles shift: a Crusaders playmaker who's been running onto stretched lines all winter suddenly has to manage territory, chase high balls and win the exit battle. Same player, completely different workload. The honest answer on the franchise-to-Test gap? I reckon we overstate the regression and understate the context. Super Rugby defences do flatter attackers, sure, weaker sides fatigued, loose rush, wider channels. But Test footy also asks questions the franchise game never bothers with.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • Fair challenge Rob, but a winter of flogging weaker Super defences means nothing if the line moves against the ABs in November. I'd back them to land the series, just not by much 💸
The line moves — catch it.

  • Fair challenge from Rob, and I've seen enough winters to know he's got a point. Back in the day plenty of provincial heroes got found out the moment the Tours rolled round. But watch as long as I have and you'll get it: the space always shrinks in a black jersey, that part never changes. Where the honest doubt sits is whether a bloke truly regresses or just faced soft defence all winter, probably a bit of both. Season's still open to my eye, and November will sort the real ones from the Bunnings flyers 😉
    Seen it all, trust me.
