Is the Bunnings NPC actually the best proving ground in world rugby?

Bunnings NPC
Spent my Sunday afternoon updating my own tracking sheet again, and the same pattern jumps out every season. The Premiership table looks stacked by August, everyone crowing about whoever's sitting top after five or six rounds, and then finals roll around and half those sides fade. My honest read after keeping these tables for years: the ladder rewards squad depth more than star quality. You get a province with a strong scrum base and four or five capable loosies grinding out tight wins in July, and they bank enough points that the table flatters them. Come the back end, when Super Rugby squads reassemble and the opposition scouting catches up, the gap between grinding out a win and fronting up in a semi becomes obvious. Caveat on all of this: sample sizes in a ten or fourteen round competition are small, one injury window can turn a table on its head, so I'd never crown the ladder leader in August as a genuine contender.

Topping the ladder means nothing if you choke in the semis tbh 😤 our lot never make it easy but I reckon we go all the way this year 🔥💪

  • Seen this debate every season for decades now and the answer rarely changes. The table flatters whoever starts hot, then finals week sorts the men from the boys, same as it did back in my day watching NPC nights at the old grounds. Young fella above, hope your lot goes all the way, but I'd want to see them actually front up in a semi before believing it 😉

  • Agree with you on the finals sorting thing, but "the answer rarely changes" is doing a lot of work there. The mid-season table isn't even measuring the same thing across provinces. Some sides play the stragglers early and bank points, others front-load their away trips. Compare the ladder in August to who everyone actually had available, then look again after the internationals strip players out, and the picture shifts every year. So yeah, the table flatters people, but "top of the ladder means nothing" is the lazy version of that claim. Show me a side topping the ladder with a genuinely harder draw and I'll rate them more than one that got fat on a soft run home. Where I'd push back on the old heads is the jump in standard: a bloke dominating NPC still has to prove it against Super Rugby Pacific derbies, and plenty haven't. The competition proves fitness and depth.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • RobbedAgainHater318 has a fair point about the draw asymmetry, and it bleeds straight into the bottom of the table too. The sides sitting in the relegation conversation usually look worse than they are because they've played their travel games early, while someone mid-table has quietly banked home fixtures against the stragglers. I track this every round in my own sheet and the gap to safety is rarely as real as it looks on the ladder in August, purely because the schedule hasn't levelled out yet. Caveat though, and I say this every season: my read is on a small sample of completed rounds, so anyone quoting the bottom four right now as proof of anything is getting ahead of themselves. What I watch is points difference versus the side directly above, not ladder position. A province can be second to last and one bonus point swing from mid-table, which is a very different story to being ten adrift with the draw turning against them.

  • Chasing table-toppers every year is how I lose multis. I want whoever's peaking in finals week, that's where I'd put the TAB money, semis form beats August points 💸

  • Watched plenty of juniors come through NPC then go quiet in Super Rugby… the step up in speed is brutal, ladder form means nothing there 😅

  • TouchlineLoyal's onto it, I've burned plenty of NZ$ multis on August ladder positions before, semis form is where the value sits. Only caveat I'd add is the draw asymmetry point, a Top 4 spot can be worth less than the odds suggest if a side's banked easy home games. So I price the run-in individually rather than the table itself. 💸
Value over a big price 💸

  • Back in the day we'd judge a bloke by how he went at Eden Park under lights, not by where his province sat in August, and I reckon that still holds. The table tells you who's got depth, the semis tell you who's got nerve, and both the punters here are right that one doesn't buy the other. Season's still wide open to me, ask me again come finals week 😉
