Honestly, if we keep relying on the old 'North Harbour grit' formula

North Harbour
Nah, I think most folks who are whining about 'flash' just don't understand what actually gets you through the grind. Grit wins games, mate, and if you can't score a lot of points through pure set-piece dominance, maybe you should check the betting lines instead of focusing on some mythical midfield genius. Remind me of your ROI when you've replaced consistent wins with pretty park rugby. 😏💰

Nah, grit alone won't cut it anymore. We need proper creative attacking flow if we want to stay ahead of the bigger teams.

  • Grit got us through plenty of nights I still remember, but Josh is spot on here 💪 If the midfield can't create anything and we're just living off the set-piece, one bad lineout day and we're toast. We've got juniors coming through who can actually play, give them the ball! Ah well, nowt to do but back them through thick and thin 🔥🙌
    You don't abandon your own.

  • Been keeping my own tables on this and the midfield creation numbers just aren't there, which is the uncomfortable part. I could be wrong, but when your only real attacking platform is the lineout drive, one wobbly throw turns the whole afternoon into a grind you can't win. SeenItAllFaithful nailed the risk. Grit got us through plenty of nights, I'm with Rob on that much, but the juniors coming through need ball in space and the current shape barely gives them any. Fix the midfield patterns and the set-piece becomes a bonus weapon rather than the whole engine. There's a nuance here though, you don't ditch the maul, you build variety around it. Otherwise the flashier Bunnings NPC sides will just leave us kicking corners all year.
Do the math before you argue.

  • back in the old days at Onewa Domain we'd take a scrum penalty and a stiff up the guts and call it a night's work, and honestly the footy was all the better for it. but even then the good sides had a midfield that could throw a cut-out, ah well, we'll see.
    Seen it all, lads.

  • The way we rely so heavily on our lineout structure is clearly working right now, but I worry about where we stand if we continue this trajectory. I could be wrong, but the stats show that while our set-piece conversion rate is high, the actual creative output from the center-field channels is quite low compared to some of the other teams. We seem to be winning with a specific strategy, but that reliance probably exposes a weakness when we face sides that can just batter us for ninety minutes instead of relying on predictable set-piece moments.
