From Lancaster Park heartbreak to Addington glory

i remember standing on the terraces at lancaster park in the wet, back in the day, numb hands and a pie that cost next to nothing. And still wouldn't have traded it for anything. but that 2008 shield night at addington, rain sheeting down and us lifting the log o' wood off auckland, that's the one that sticks with me. seen worse nights, plenty of them, but few better. ah well, we'll see what this season brings 😄

Bloody pies were half the experience back then aye 🔥 Was at Addington in 08 soaked to the bone, best night of my life, no contest! Red and black forever 💪🙌
On the terraces since I was a kid.

  • Metric_nerd you're speaking my language there, i was at lancaster park in the days when the terraces heaved and the fog came off the plains by halftime, didn't see the ball for twenty minutes but sang the whole way through 😄 and aye, that 2008 night at addington, rain hammering down, everyone hugging strangers when the log o' wood came home, my old man had a tear in his eye and pretended it was the weather. wouldn't trade a single soaked minute of it.
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • Chur for the memories in this thread, good to see the old guard out in force 😄 I was at Addington that night too, absolutely saturated but nobody left early. Here's the thing I keep mulling over though: the 2008 mob had that nasty streak, the forwards doing the dirty work up the middle and a backline that just smelled the line. This current side I rate a lot, but they're younger and a bit looser, more flash than grind. When they front up in the wet like we did, then I'll start believing. Sample size on this season is small yet, so holding judgment until they've played a few away ones. Either way, rain or shine, red and black forever 🖤❤️

@BootToBallGuru that nasty streak is what everyone forgets when they romanticise that season aye. Word going round from those who were close to the setup is some of what went on behind doors would raise eyebrows even now 🤫 screenshot this, you'll all find out soon enough.

  • Gotta stir the pot a bit here. Half of you claiming "best night of my life" at Addington in 08 were probably watching from the pub like I nearly did 😄 I was there though, soaked through, and I'd argue the Lancaster Park fog days made that shield win taste sweeter. Twenty years of heartbreak earns a log o' wood properly.
Do the math before you argue.

  • Chur OldSchoolSince86, your old man and half my mates share the same story 😂 I put a few NZ$ on Canterbury that night at the TAB and got soaked standing on the Addington terraces anyway, worth every cent. Fair dinkum nights like that you can't price.
Up one week, down the next. Classic.

@TouchlineUltra that's the way to do it aye, have a flutter and stand in the rain anyway 😄 I did the same sort of thing, had Canterbury in a multi that weekend and the payout went straight on the next round of beers. Only slip I ever made was backing the opposition in '08, still haven't lived that down with the boys 😭
