Did the TMO get it wrong in Counties Manukau's loss to Auckland?
Hi guys, new here so don't laugh 😅 watched the Counties Manukau vs Auckland game on 12 September (that 33:43 one) and a couple of TMO calls had me yelling at the telly, but I honestly don't know the laws well enough to say if the whistle was right. Can someone explain simply what the key calls actually were? Cheers 🏉

✓No shame in yelling at the telly, young fella, half of Pukekohe was doing the same that night 😄 the 33:43 one at Auckland had a couple of moments where the replay never showed us enough to judge properly. Back in my day the TMO didn't exist at all, so I've learned to trust the whistle more than my own eyes on the tight ones, but if anyone was actually at Eden Park and saw those calls from the ground, chime in, that's the bit the broadcast hid from us.Seen it all, lads.

What actually got missed that the replay didn't show? I've seen nowt posted yet 🤡It's a lottery, not sport.

Model_Head, the defence conceded 43, sure, but that doesn't settle whether the whistle was right. You can lose fair and still get a bad call in a ten-point game. I keep my own tables every round, and 33:43 was the closest of the three losses; Otago at Navigation Homes Stadium two nights later was a 21:50 hiding, which is a different conversation entirely. There's a nuance here though: without the law references or the angles the broadcast didn't show, we're all just yelling like UltraUltra. My rule after watching replays is simple. Check whether the TMO had jurisdiction to intervene at all, because half the time the complaint is about process, not the call itself. Small sample though, one tight night in Auckland. If anyone who was actually at the ground saw the big screen replays, post what you saw, because the telly version told us very little. 📊Numbers > vibes.

Good question, and a fair one. Back in my day there was no TMO at all, so anything they get now is a bonus 😉 but to answer you: the TMO can only rule on what actually reaches their screen, which is usually the broadcast feeds, if the director never cut to an angle, they can't rule on it. In that Counties Manukau game at Auckland, a couple of moments looked doubtful precisely because the telly never showed the reverse angle, so nobody could say the whistle was wrong with any confidence. Seen worse calls with better footage, mind.Been here longer than some have followed.

Watching that replay back, the thing that got me was how ten points flatters Auckland a bit, Counties were right in it for long stretches. So I don't think anyone's silly for wondering about a call or two 🤔 But GoTheDistanceOrNothing has a point, the defence leaked plenty on its own. Still, if the director never cut to an angle, what's the TMO meant to do, guess?
