What actually is a lineout?
Okay don't laugh at me but I've been watching games for a while and I still half-know what a lineout is π
I get that the ball goes over the sideline (into touch?) and then everyone lines up... but then the guys get LIFTED into the air? Like who decided that was the sensible option haha
And who actually throws the ball in - is it a random player or a specific position every time? Help me out please, I feel like I nod along every game and have no clue what's actually happening π Also someone said punters look at lineout stats before betting. How does that even work?

No laughing here mate, we all started somewhere π When the ball goes over the sideline (that's "into touch"), play stops and the hooker, the number 2 in the front row - throws it straight back in between two lines of forwards. The lads get hoisted up because whoever catches the throw wins the ball for his team, so a good jumper is worth his weight in gold. Back in the day at Eden Park we'd all just groan when our throw went crooked; watch a few lineouts with that in mind and you'll get it quick.Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

The lifting part is just stealing height, two blokes hoist the jumper so he can catch it above the defenders, dead simple once you've seen it a few times. For punting purposes the hooker's throw is mostly a coin toss, which is why I never touch lineout props and stick to the TAB head-to-head and line stuff where I can actually read form. The line moves β catch it.

Itβs not just about the jump. If the forwards aren't properly locked in, all that lifting is just wasted effort.Sample first, conclusions after.
