Can someone explain offside to me simply?
Right, dumb question incoming, go easy on me π
I keep hearing commentators yell "he's offside!" during games and I nod along like I know what it means, but honestly I don't. Like if a player is running next to the ball carrier, is he offside or not? And why does the ref blow it up straight away for a penalty sometimes but other times nothing happens?
Don't laugh, but I've been watching the Canes every weekend and still can't spot it on the field. Can someone explain like I'm five? π

βDon't laugh, guys π but can I check something on the same term? Say the ball is loose after a tackle and a bloke is running towards it from the wrong side, is he offside the moment he's in front of the ball, or only if he actually touches it first? I watched a game with my mate and he swore the player had to play it to be pinged, but I thought just being there and stopping someone else getting it was enough π€Learning from the veterans, go easy π

no such thing as a dumb question mate, we've all started somewhere. think of it like queuing at the dairy, if you're in front of the ball you're in the wrong line and you can't touch it or get involved until someone puts you back onside, usually a teammate carrying it past you. for your loose ball, he's only really in trouble once he plays it or interferes from the wrong side, that's when the whistle goes. watch a couple of rucks closely one saturday and it'll click, ah well, we'll see πSeen it all, lads.

You gotta think of it like a barrier; if a player is physically standing ahead of the ball when it goes loose, even if they don't touch it, they've crossed the line. The refs give away the penalty because that positional advantage is too obvious to ignore, basically ruining the chance of the other team making a clean pass or keeping things moving. Remember, even a small lapse in positioning can change the entire field dynamic, which is the kind of edge you look for when checking the line movement before a big multi. πΈBankroll discipline wins.
