Twenty years on and I still get goosebumps watching that 2005 Tri
twenty years, good grief. i was in a flat on great king street watching that eden park test, flatmates all crammed round a wee telly with the worst aerial in Dunedin, snow on the screen half the time. when carter nailed that drop goal from halfway we heard the roar right down the street, neighbours out on their porches yelling like it was a cup final. my old flatmate jumped clean off the couch and knocked his beer straight over my washing. seen worse telly, seen worse nights, but that one stuck.
funny how the tea-spilling stories survive longer than the match reports eh 😄 here's to the tape never wearing out.

✓Snow on the telly and you still saw that Carter drop goal go over 😱🔥 I was at the folks' place in Nelson, old man kicked the couch so hard the cat bolted... twenty years and I still get chills watching it, best halfway strike you'll ever see 💪🙌One love, one side ❤️

ah that drop goal, i was in the lounge in Tauranga with my old dear yelling at the screen before it even left his boot 😄 dad always reckoned Carter struck it like Bob Fitzsimmons threw a punch. Clean from way out. twenty years on and my heart still does a little hop every time i see the replay. seen worse celebrations than your dad's tea mind you, mine nearly went through the window 😉

Funny, my old man spilled his tea on that exact drop goal too, and I watched the current mob last weekend and found myself wishing one of them would just have a crack from halfway. That 2005 side backed themselves from anywhere; this lot are lovelier footballers in some ways but far more careful. Different eras, both great, though that Carter team still gives me the bigger shiver 📊Numbers > vibes.

Respectfully, BadBeatKing, I could be wrong, but the current mob barely ever get quick-enough ball in the right part of the field to even consider a shot from halfway. Different era entirely.Do the math before you argue.

That tea-spilling story nearly made me spit mine out 😂 My old coach at the juniors was AT Eden Park that night and swears you could hear the whole ground gasp then erupt before the flags even went up. We'll never see another strike like it tbh, kids these days won't have a clue 🔥🙌Heart with the team, head on pause.

Watching that drop goal through a fuzzy video store rental copy on a TV older than me, and even then my flatmate threw his drink at the ceiling 🤣 least I only spilled beer worth like NZ$4. Hold my pint whenever they replay it, I'll be on the couch in Napier with goosebumps all over again 😂Memes are analysis too.

ChrisD's point about ball speed is the one that matters, honestly. I keep a running tally of attacking-phase territory for the current side and the difference with that 2005 lot isn't willingness, it's where on the park they received the ball and how fast. Carter was taking those shots off first or second phase, inside the opposition half, with the defence scrambled. Halfway lasers only work when the platform gives you three seconds of clean sight. Sample size caveat applies because I've only tracked a handful of recent tests properly, but the pattern holds: more possession, worse field position, slower service. Blame the game plan, not the boots. And Classic_Est's coach is right about Eden Park that night, my uncle was in the terraces and still says the roar arrived before the flags did. Some things the numbers can't capture 📊

Man those 2005 vibes were insane ah well, such a perfect match we deserved that win. It's hard to tell the difference these days sometimes, but I reckon we've seen some real promise from the younger guys too. They're giving everything out on the field, you know? Still backing them through thick and thin anyway. 🔥🙌💪You don't abandon your own.
