My spreadsheet says hold the wallet. A Crusaders No. 8 off-contract at that age usually means NZ Rugby top-up territory, and there's a nuance here, we'd be paying premium dollars for his best years already banked elsewhere. Factor in we've got academy loosies two seasons from peaking, and I'd rather spend that cap space on a lock and re-sign our own ball-runners. Small sample though, the whisper itself - one cousin in Wellington barely moves my line.Numbers > vibes.

your spreadsheet needs another column, mate 😄 back in my day we said the same about blokes leaving provincial rivals late in their careers and plenty of them still had two or three good seasons in the tank - a loosie's body varies, and if he fancies Wellington the heart matters as much as the mileage. i'd still have a quiet NZ$ ready, worst case we save it.Been here longer than some have followed.

And RobBeliever, I'd want far more than a pub anecdote before I'm paying a wage out of the cap - one bloke seen at a few doos is a sample size of roughly nothing. Could've been a wedding, could've been a corporate box, could've been he just likes the Courtenay Place bars 📊 That said, my actual concern is the minutes question RobbedAgainHater318 raised. If he's third in the Crusaders rotation and suddenly becomes our headline signing, you're paying a starter's wage for a bloke whose recent workload says otherwise. There's a nuance here. A loosie on limited game time can still be tidy for two seasons, but tidy isn't what you pay a marquee No. 8 for. Show me the tackle count holding up over a full campaign and I'll happily eat my words.
