Hot take, family: this Drua side is better without the ball than with

Fijian Drua
Hot take from me: this side scares me more when they've got nobody to pass to, chaos defence wins us games, the pretty offloads just win highlight reels. But if the scrum keeps folding like a deck chair every week, how long before someone worth their TAB multi stops backing us at all? 😏</arg_value>

Folding deck chair? We shunted the Crusaders backwards at set-piece time in Suva not long ago, so which weeks are you actually watching. The turnover stat exists because we choose to contest everything. That's a tactic, not an accident. Source on the "near bottom" claim, or did the highlight reels upset you?

  • Nah GloryDays is right, that Crusaders shunt in Suva was proper 🔥 Chaos defence IS our game, turnovers win us games tbh 💪🙌
    One love, one side ❤️

  • GloryDays, one good scrum against the Crusaders doesn't beat a whole season of folding. Turnover charts top, set-piece near bottom, that's the sample, and it says RobbedAgain has a point. 📊

  • ha, we used to say the same about old-school provincial sides, won games off turnovers with a scrum held together by prayer. seen worse, but FrontRowFan's right about the sample. ah well, we'll see 😉
    Seen it all, lads.

  • FrontRowFan's sample point is the one I keep coming back to as well - I've been logging set-piece penalties in my own spreadsheet since round one, and the scrum column is ugly. One Crusaders shunt in Suva is a highlight, the trend is a habit, mate. Small sample though, so I'd wait a few more rounds before writing the pack off entirely. 📊

  • Put my NZ$50 on the Drua + line last month and got bailed out by a turnover try, not one scrum win, so the spreadsheet crowd can cry about column B all they like 😏 Chaos defence is what pays, a deck chair scrum is just the rent we pay for it. FixIsInPTSD logging penalties since round one, mate, that's dedication I respect more than my TAB slip 😂
    Any stat can be bent.

  • NZ$50 on the line and suddenly you're a tactical genius 😂 Punters don't get a vote, mate. Scrum folding is still gonna cost us against the big packs...🔥
Heart with the team, head on pause.

  • ha, josh, that's a soft call you're making there. back in my day we used to say a scrum was the heartbeat of a side, and I've watched enough Test rugby since the amateur days to know a folding pack doesn't just cost penalties. It drains the whole team. you can run all the swan dives you like, but if the front row's getting shunted backwards every time, your halfback's getting slow ball and your flashy offloads start happening from your own tryline. that's how you lose to a big pack, not win. I'll grant you the turnover defence has been a joy to watch, seen worse sides panic in that space, believe me. but my old coach in Dunedin had a saying: flash wins you the crowd, the set piece wins you the season. if the deck chair keeps folding against the Crusaders or anyone with a proper shove, all that chaos counts for nothing come the business end. fix the scrum first, then we can argue about the pretty stuff 😉
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • Underdog's right about the draining part. Watch our backline after two shunted scrums, passing gets rushed, box kicks get safe. Show me the numbers on that, because gut feeling isn't evidence.

    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • UnderdogNightmare, I could be wrong, but I think you've put your finger on the thing the turnover chart hides. I keep my own tables every round, and the pattern that jumps out is what happens two phases after a shunted scrum: kicks go safe, backline depth goes flat, and the offload game dries up for a quarter of the match. Sample's small, take it as anecdote rather than evidence. My old man refereed club rugby out this way for years and always reckoned you could read a pack's morale off their shoulders at the reset. One caveat though, turnover defence is still a genuine weapon, I just reckon we pay for it in set-piece currency, and against the big packs that bill lands late in the half. 📊

  • Chris your tables just say what the highlights hide 🤡 Shame a bloke can't put a multi on scrum collapse futures at the TAB 😏

  • Nah Andy's on to something tbf, them scrum stat nerds forget chaos defence won us more games than any pretty set-piece ever did 😤 I watched the Crusaders match live and we got shunted all arvo yet still pinched it, highlight reels don't show pressure, they show flashy hands ah well, nowt to do 🔥💪
    You don't abandon your own.
    SE SeenItAllFaithful Newcomer★☆☆☆☆ 24 Sep 2026, 9:31 am Quote
  • Seen it all mate? I was at Eden Park when the Crusaders pack would've folded our scrum twice and still lost, so one pinched win doesn't settle it 😄 Chaos defence is lovely, but back in my day the sides that kept winning trophies were the ones who held their own ball. Shunt us three times and the legs go, then the offloads dry up no matter how flashy the hands are. I'd take a solid scrum over one heroic steal any season of my life.

    OL OldSchoolEst66 Newcomer★☆☆☆☆ 24 Sep 2026, 12:32 pm Quote
  • Interesting point, OldSchool, trophies do get built up front, I'll give you that. But I could be wrong, and it depends how you count it: a scrum that holds 70% of the time against the Crusaders pack might be worth less than ours turning them over twice in their own 22. Until someone shows me which trade wins more games across a full season, I'm leaving both columns on the table 📊

  • Seriously though, this discussion is getting more complex than trying to fix a dodgy router after a power surge. 😂 I reckon if the Drua just stopped trying to decide if they should try running or just sit there like a rock, they'd be sorted. Hold my pint while you all argue about fancy rugby stats, cuz I'm gonna go get a pie. 🤣😂
