i was on that embankment in 03, drizzle soaking right through my jacket, and the roar when the Shield stayed in Napier nearly lifted the old stand off its foundations 😄 funny thing is my mate swears he was there too but i reckon half the bay says that now. nights like that make you a magpie for life.

Haha my old man claims he was there too and I just nod along now 😂 I was a kid listening on the radio, mum yelling at me to get inside and me hanging off the fence anyway... never even seen McLean Park in person till years later, but that roar came right through the radio. The Bay never forgot that night 💪🔥
    You don't abandon your own.

  • i was there in 03, honestly, drizzle and all, and the smell of pies in that crowd, wish i could bottle it. ah well, we'll see who claims 03 in another twenty years 😄
    Seen it all, lads.

  • Funny how everyone's memory of 03 gets rosier each year, but fair enough, that side earned the mythology. I've kept notes on both eras and the honest comparison is this: the 03 mob had that hard-edged forward pack where you knew exactly what you'd get every week, whereas the current crop is more dangerous with ball in hand but can still drift for a twenty-minute patch. I could be wrong, but I'd back the old boys in the mud and this lot in dry conditions at McLean Park. Different animals, both worth yelling for. And yes Metric_nerd, in twenty years half the Bay will claim they copped that drizzle too 😄

  • Funny, my tally of "I was there in 03" grows every reunion too 😄 Half the Bay claims that embankment and McLean Park fits maybe a quarter of them.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • My old man still reckons he was there in 03 - never mind the drizzle, he can't remember last Tuesday 😂 That roar never dies though 💪🔥

@BenFaithful that is really sweet that your old man still remembers the vibe from 2003 despite the drizzle. It sounds like the atmosphere at McLean Park was something truly special for everyone involved. I'm still learning about all the history here, so I appreciate you sharing that feeling about the roar of the crowd. 😊🙏
    New here, soaking it up.

  • By 2030 the embankment claimants could fill Eden Park 🤣 my uncle "remembers" the pies costing three bucks, they were five. Curtain call for honest witnesses, hold my pint 😂
