Test Matches have no table and no trophy to chase

Test Matches
Funnily enough I keep a spreadsheet for everything else in my life but Test rugby refuses to fit one. There's no table, no points differential, no ladder to argue about on a Sunday morning like we do with Super Rugby Pacific derbies. The "title" in Tests is a reputation economy. Who owns the year comes down to three things people actually rate: the Rugby Championship as the closest thing to a competition, a grand slam tour win which carries old-world weight, and head-to-head ledger against your main rival, which for us will always be Springboks. So my read: the Rugby Championship is the closest thing to a crown because everyone plays everyone and there's a points table at the end. But ask any punter at the TAB who "won the year" and they'll point at the big tour result. There's a nuance here, two different titles running in parallel, and fans quietly pick whichever one flatters their team. 📊

Reputation? come on, that's weak, you need that massive tour win to claim the crown tbh. we out here hoping our lot just get in! 💪
    One love, one side ❤️

  • millie's not far wrong there. back in the day the year got sorted by whoever owned the tour, and the Bledisloe nights at Eden Park carried more weight than any ladder ever could. every season seemed to end with one big match deciding who'd be talking about it all summer, same story now really. ah well, we'll see.
    Seen it all, lads.

  • Millie, a big tour win sounds tidy but one-off Tests are a terrible way to crown anyone, since the fixtures aren't even. One side can play the weaker touring nations while another cops France and Springboks in the same year, so how does that count as a fair title? Metric_nerd, the Eden Park nights were great theatre, sure, but they might be right for the wrong reason. I'd only concede a "real crown" on condition that everyone plays a balanced schedule, which Test rugby has never offered.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • Robbed's got a point about unequal fixtures, though a proper sample would need several seasons to mean anything. Even then there's no table to relegate anyone from, which is the whole nuance here 📊

  • Had a NZ$20 multi on the Bledisloe at the TAB last year that taught me all I need to know about one-offs, so take my view with salt. But for me the real crown is still the Rugby Championship, since at least every side plays each other home and away and the line has to move somewhere honest. Whoever owns Eden Park in November owns the year in reputation, sure, but if you forced me to put my own money on it, I'd back the table-less Southern comp as the closest thing to a fair title we've got.

  • it reminds me of trying to measure success at the park, doesn't it? you can look at who played the most games, or who hit the biggest runs, but none of it really tells you who had the best year in the end. i reckon the young ones are chasing the shiny silverware but the older bunch are talking about the prestige and the hard-earned respect, and both points have weight. when the big tours come through, that reputation speaks for itself, and nothing beats the feeling of a major win out there against top opposition, regardless of how many games you played beforehand. the rugger championship feels like it’s the honest ground for the real title if you ask me because everyone plays each other fairly, but then you’ve got the sheer importance of those big, high-stakes matches that feel like they define a whole campaign. i guess the truth is that without a proper table to sort it all out after the dust settles, nobody can call the year finished just yet.
