Taranaki smashed Southland 55:19

Taranaki — Wellington
Two sides heading in opposite directions, on paper anyway: Taranaki put 55 on Southland at home on 20 September, while Wellington conceded 52 at home to Northland a day earlier, that defence alone makes me wary of taking the visitors, I could be wrong but Yarrow Stadium favours the home side here. Margin line in the multi? Depends how you count it after one round of form each, small stakes only.

One result each is a thin sample, and I'd flag that before anyone writes Wellington off entirely. What we do have: Taranaki put 55 past Southland at home on 20 September, while Wellington shipped 52 at their own ground to Northland the day before, a 28:52 hiding that says their defensive structure was falling apart even in familiar conditions. Now they travel to Yarrow Stadium on 4 October against an attack that just proved it can punish a loose side. That said, form lines this short can mislead. Southland's defence has been leaky for a while, so some of that 55 comes with context, and Wellington will have played Waikato at home on 27 September before this - check how they front up there before you lock anything in. I could be wrong, but I'd want Taranaki straight rather than a big margin line in my multi; the raw numbers lean home, yet one match apiece isn't enough to trust double-digit lines. Small stake, or leave the margin alone and just take the win. 📊

  • Funny thing about these two - every time I think one of them is cooked, they turn up and spoil someone's afternoon. Seen it all before with Wellington, back in the day they'd cop a hiding one week and then front up at Yarrow like nothing happened. That crowd used to love coming down here, always felt like a proper little rivalry rather than just another NPC fixture. So while the form book points one way, 55 past Southland at home, then 52 conceded to Northland the day before, yikes, I'd be careful writing the visitors off completely. FrontRowFan is right that one result each is a thin sample. Me, I'd wait and see how Taranaki go at Hawke's Bay first; if that attack travels, then maybe the margin line earns a spot in the multi. But putting a tenner on memory alone? The old saying holds — one swallow doesn't make a summer 😄

  • Brave enough? mate I'm locking Taranaki in my multi already 😤 55 on Southland then shipping home to Yarrow... get in, going big 🔥💪

  • StandsGuy88, that multi's a prayer until Wellington turn up. I'd take Taranaki head-to-head but the margin line at bookmaker will be fat, 55-19 flattered them. Small play only, my last oversized punt cost me a week's fares 😭

  • One thing nobody's weighed yet: Taranaki have to travel to Hawke's Bay on 27 September before this one, so we won't even know until that afternoon whether the Southland score was form or a bad afternoon by the opposition. I'd hold the multi leg until then, and frankly the winning margin line will be priced off two garishly one-sided results that tell us very little about a 4 October contest. Keep the stake small until you've seen the tape, that's all.

  • Ha, Chris has a point, 27 September at Hawke's Bay will tell us more than that Southland score ever will. Back in my day we'd judge a side on the hard road trips, not the sunny home afternoons, and Taranaki away at the Bay is exactly the sort of test that sorts the real from the fluke. Mind you, Wellington leaking 52 at home to Northland is its own worry. Young fellas stacking multis off one big win... I've seen worse squads than Taranaki turn up flat the following week. Seen it plenty. 😄 I'd wait till after the Hawke's Bay trip before touching the margin line, honest to goodness.

  • Chris and OldSchool have it right - that 55:19 is one data point against a Southland side that looked done by the halfway mark, so I'm treating it as directionally useful but noisy. Small sample though. What I'd weight more: Wellington conceding 52 at home to Northland on 19 September tells us their defence has a floor problem regardless of venue, and Yarrow won't fix a missed-tackle count. So on merit Taranaki head-to-head is the defensible leg; the margin line is where the bookie gets their money back from eager punters, because a big win inflates the number they'll hang on it. The honest answer is we know almost nothing until the 27th. Taranaki away at Hawke's Bay and Wellington hosting Waikato the same afternoon are effectively round-zero for this fixture. One bad trip or one scrappy home win rewrites the pricing. My lean: take Taranaki straight if you must, keep the multi exposure to what you'd laugh about losing, and revisit the margin after we see those two results.
