Right, lads. Time we pinch a proper fetch-and-kick ten before

Word is there's a certain ten down in Dunedin off contract next year and the Canes haven't so much as picked up the phone, quietly confident we could pinch him if someone with a bit of nous rang first. Reckon any of you lot have his number? 😏

Whispered contract gossip with zero sourcing, and I'm meant to phone him myself? Show me one actual report first, hard out.
    Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

  • Right, before anyone books flights to Dunedin, a quick reality check from someone who keeps the spreadsheets 📊 Age and position first: if this ten is off contract next year he'll be what, mid-to-late twenties? That's prime window, which is exactly why one club sniffing around won't be the only one. Canes' problem is depth chart logic. We've already got cover there, so cap space spent on a marquee ten means something gives elsewhere, probably the loose forward group everyone keeps raving about. Sample size caveat too: one quiet season of rumours tells us nothing about actual negotiations. Clubs routinely pick up the phone in November without a whisper reaching the media until the deed's done. My honest read? If he genuinely wanted to stay south they'd have re-signed him by now, and the silence usually means he's testing the market. So there's a real chance, but I'd put it well under even money — more like a $1.85 punter would think twice about. Worth the call regardless, cost nothing.

  • BootToBallGuru with spreadsheets already, love it 😄 but mid-to-late twenties is exactly why I'd move early, not sit on the fence. Look at our recent track record when we've waited on a proven ten, someone else signs him while we're "reviewing options". And before anyone quotes his numbers down south, caveat: one season behind a pack that's been under the pump all year flatters nobody's stats. Our set-up would suit him far better. Where there's smoke, ring the bloke, worst case he tells us to get lost and we're no worse off than today.

  • aye, all this "reviewing options" talk reminds me of the nights we sat at athletic park freezing while other clubs got their men sorted by june 😄 back in my day you rang a fella, had a yarn over a few quiet ones and shook hands - none of this spreadsheet stalling. mid twenties and off contract? get on the phone tomorrow, i say. patience is a virtue but it's lost us more tens than i care to remember 😉

  • Ha, the spreadsheet crowd strikes again 😂 While BootToBallGuru builds pivot tables, every club in the country's already had a yarn with the bloke. Remind me of your ROI on waiting, guru? 🤡💸

  • FixIsInPTSD is onto something - we did sit on our hands last time and watched the bloke end up in blue. Only caveat: moving early means nothing if the offer's lazy. Ring him, sure, but front up with actual money and a proper game plan, otherwise we're just the first name he forgets by June.

@GloryDays_4Life spot on mate. Remember when we all assumed the chequebook would do the talking? Turns out nobody wrote the cheque 😂

  • glorydays nailed it tbh, first in the queue means squat if the dosh is lazy 😅 front up proper coin and show him he's the man, then he'll sign 💪🔥

  • I could be wrong, but half of you seem to think a phone call and a friendly chat beats a contract with numbers in it. Ben, "he'll sign" if the coin's right. That's the whole point Glory Days made, and you've talked yourself in a circle. I keep a table of every ten we've let walk since 2019, and the pattern is always the same: slow offer, lazy offer, bloke in blue. Ring him by all means, but if the cheque's shy we're just polishing his leverage. 📊

  • Seen this movie before, eh. Back in the day we all got excited about a rumour in the same way, told ourselves the boys up top just needed to make one call — and six months later the bloke was wearing someone else's jersey and we'd spent the whole winter arguing about whose fault it was. The young lot never saw that, but those of us who've been around a while remember how these whispers usually fizzle out. Still, I'd rather we tried and missed than sat on our hands again. Time will tell, like my old coach used to say. The sun rises on the recruitment table too 😉
