pulled the truck up outside the clubrooms on my way past this afternoon and the pie order's already stacked by the back door, whole crates of them, so UltraUltra get in early mate, back in my day those trays were picked clean before the anthems even started π i've watched the young fella through the fence at a couple of trainings and what gets me is how still he keeps his hands when the wind's doing silly things off the plains. most first-fives on debut look like startled rabbits for a quarter of an hour, this lad looks like he wants the ball on the first phase. Robbed, losing by a whole pie and owning it proudly. That's club spirit right there π coins in the pocket, beanie on, and we'll lift the roof off One NZ Stadium on his first touch.Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

saw the young fella having a kick around after training on tuesday arvo, stayed out there a good half hour after the rest of the lads had gone in, putting balls into the corners while the groundstaff were waiting to lock up. patience of a saint, that boy. old school approach to it, none of this fancy stuff, just put the ball where it needs to go and get on with your day π back in the day we'd have been down the front of the terrace with a thermos and a woolly hat freezing quietly and calling that atmosphere. ah well, we'll see how he goes, but between you and me, my NZ$5's already sitting in the truck console ready for the clubrooms. get in early like OldSchoolEst66 says, those crates have a funny habit of vanishing before the anthems even finish πSeen it all, lads.

Kicking into the corners in decent conditions tells you plenty about the work ethic, but the real test is whether the technique holds when the ball's greasy and the wind's coming off the plains. There's a nuance here too, depends how you count it - extra kicking reps are great, but if the lad's practising forty-metre touchfinders and the game plan on the night asks for contestable bombs and low grubbers, all that time on the pitch is sharpening the wrong tool. Watch the warm-up on Saturday before anyone anoints him. Small sample though, one training observation from a clubrooms sighting. Still, keen to see him get a proper run - the wall's due someone new to shout at. πNumbers > vibes.
