Beauden's best years in a Hurricanes jersey are behind him and it's
Beauden staying for under a million a season when Japan was waving serious money at him — that's loyalty, and I'd take that over a shiny new recruit every day 🤡. But sure thing, mate, if you'd rather bin the bloke who won us back-to-back titles for a "next decade" punt, put that multi on at the TAB and remind me of your ROI? 😏

✓Loyalty's lovely, Rob, but he took a pay cut to sit behind a rebuilding pack. Where exactly are the wins in that?Hype isn't an argument.

Nah Kev, the wins ARE the point 😤 we don't win 2016 without him, and I'd back him all day for less than a mill. Loyalty matters, tbh 🖤💛Heart with the team, head on pause.

Kev's got half a point about the rebuilding pack, but I keep coming back to the sample. 2016 and 2016-17 back-to-back titles happened with Beauden running that attack, and the funny thing about his pay cut is what it buys us: continuity at first five while the young halves come through behind him. I could be wrong, but I'd rather pay under NZ$1m for a known quantity mentoring the next decade than gamble that money on an unknown import who might take two seasons to find our system. The Japan money is real, mind you, and I don't blame anyone for taking it. Context matters though - what he turned down makes the loyalty call worth something, and it keeps our book flexible for re-signing the young forwards who'll actually front that rebuild. Worst case he holds the fort two more seasons and we've lost nothing. 📊

i've been watching test first fives since the amateur days, and let me tell you. Every good side had to learn to move on from their greats eventually. we all loved the blokes who stayed loyal too, so i get the warm feeling round here. but loyalty's a lovely thing at a club barbie and a cold thing on a saturday night when the young halves are sitting on the bench watching a bloke run the show on memory. nick's right that continuity buys you something, mind. back in my day we lost half our best men to league or overseas every couple of years and it gutted the provinces. under NZ$1m for a bloke who's won us titles, while the kids come through behind him, that's not nothing. my worry is only the timeline: give him one or two seasons to hand over the reins, not five. watch as long as i have and you'll know when a first five is teaching and when he's holding on 😉Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

MatchdayTillIDie, you've put your finger on something with that last line. I could be wrong, but I'd argue the two things get muddled: loving the bloke for what he gave us, and trusting him with the next decade of our season. Both can be true at once, I'll cheer him till the whistle goes, and still want Cameron Roigard learning the trade behind him rather than waiting for a handover in 2028. One caveat I keep banging on about: pay him under NZ$1m as a bridge and a mentor, fine, I'm comfortable with that arithmetic. Pay him that money expecting 2016 form back from a 34-year-old in a pack still finding its feet, and we'll be having a very different thread by June. I do my tables every round and even the kindest sample says the arrow points one way. Sentiment in the stands, spreadsheets in the boardroom - that's how I'd run it anyway.Do the math before you argue.

Chris nails it, loving the bloke and paying him are two different things. I put a cheeky TAB multi on us making the top four next season; wouldn't touch it while we're planning nostalgia 😏Here to argue, not to nod along.

Nah Rob, loyalty's lovely but it doesn't tackle anyone 😅 Beauden gave us 2016 and that whole era, legends forever, but planning a decade around a bloke the other side of 30 feels like watching the 2011 final again hoping it ends different ah well, nowt to do. Pay him respect, sure, under NZ$1m for the jersey? fine. But the next decade starts with the young halves getting actual game time, not warm nostalgia 💪🔥You don't abandon your own.

easy lads, seen worse panics than this. grant fox got written off at 32 and still ran a World Cup. beauden's earned the benefit of the doubt for under NZ$1m 😄
-
FrontRow88, source on the Fox comparison? He ran a World Cup at 32 because the whole ABs machine around him was settled, Beauden's getting game time in a side still finding its halves. Not convinced a discount price buys us a plan for 2030, and where exactly are the next decade's minutes going if he's parked there?
-
GloryDays has a point, Fox had a settled machine around him, Beauden hasn't. Caveat though: one season's game time is a small sample, so I'd hold the verdict until we see the halves settle properly. 📊

I'd put my TAB money on the decade plan over the nostalgia, mate. Under NZ$1m for a fading 10? Even I wouldn't back that line 😏Show me your ROI first 😏

@StatHeadStats fading? bloke ran the show last season, keep ya TAB money 😤 under NZ$1m for that know-how is a steal, our lot never make it easy but I'm backing him all day 💪🔥One love, one side ❤️
-
Beauden's still our best option atm, deal with it 😤 under NZ$1m is a steal, StatHead can take his TAB money elsewhere 🙄 ah well, nowt to do, we back him all day 💪@Dunedin easy mate, some of us gotta actually work the bar instead of memorising stats 😂 for under NZ$1m I'd back him too, worst case he coaches the young halves by 2026 🤣Hold my pint.

seen worse calls than this, mate, beauden at under NZ$1m is still fair value for the know-how alone. nostalgia? nah, he earned the jersey back in the day. ah well, we'll see 😉Seen it all, lads.

FixIsInPTSD said it best — one season is a small sample, and I could be wrong, but I'd want to see how the halves bed in before writing him off. At under NZ$1m he's hardly a burden on the cap; the real question is whether we've got someone behind him ready by 2026, and that's where I'd keep my eye. Jury's out for me.Do the math before you argue.
