Beale at ten is holding back our young halves and it's time to blood
Near NZ$500k a season for a bloke who'll be lucky to see out the year injury-free, and we're still blocking the academy kid's pathway? I rate Beale's name as much as anyone, but names don't tackle or pass well any more. Every week he starts is another week our young flyhalf watches from the stand learning absolutely nothing. The whole competition's a development shop. Everyone else has figured that out.
And in reality, what's the actual plan here? Hope Beale magically finds his 2011 form on the money we're paying him? I'd rather lose ugly with a kid getting reps than lose ugly with a well-paid veteran. Sure, some punters on here still fancy the old head for the line, fine, enjoy the TAB odds on that, I'll back the future with my cash instead. 🤡💸 Blood the kids already. 😏

The NZ$500k figure is rumour, and blocking pathways cuts both ways. Throw an unproven ten in behind a beaten pack every week and you can ruin him as easily as blood him. Concede Beale's probably past it, mind.Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

saw the academy kid get twenty minutes off the bench a few weeks back and honestly he looked more composed than blokes I've watched for years. back in my day we blooded young halves without fuss, you threw them in against the Lions, they got trodden on, they learned. nobody waited for a perfect training report before giving a kid a go. Beale's been a good servant, no bitterness from me, but near NZ$500k (rumoured or not) for a bloke running the same angles while the youngster screams for time? watch as long as I have and you'll get it: clubs that protect the old name always finish second. give the kid ten rounds, like Chris says. worst case we lose games we were losing anyway 😉Been here longer than some have followed.

UnderdogNightmare, spot on about the twenty minutes - I've got that run in my own spreadsheet and it's the most encouraging sample we've had all season. My caveat: blood him at home first, not in Canberra. 📊Numbers > vibes.

Interesting that everyone's suddenly keen to anoint the kid off twenty minutes against tired legs. I'll believe it when I see it over a full eighty in Canberra, because the Brumbies will target a rookie ten all arvo and we all know it. That said, I'm not defending the current setup. Beale at second receiver jogging around on near NZ$500k while the academy lad gets scraps off the bench is backwards any way you slice it. My condition is simple: if the kid starts in Canberra, give him a proper forward platform and a real kicking game around him, otherwise we'll be back here in a week calling for Beale's head for the wrong reasons.Sample first, conclusions after.

RobReds has a point about the sample size, hard out. Twenty minutes is a small table. But I ran the tape on Beale's passing angles and the kid read the defence quicker in twenty. Give him Canberra, worst case we learn something.Do the math before you argue.

Metric_nerd has a point though, one torched kid in Canberra doesn't prove the pathway's broken either way. Small sample both directions, which is exactly why nobody here should be calling it settled.
