Perfect All Blacks or a Wallabies ambush at Eden Park on October 10?

New Zealand — Australia
Interesting one, because the table tells two different stories here. The All Blacks are sitting second in the Nations Championship with three wins from three and 121 points scored, while the Wallabies have dropped two of three but still put up 114 themselves - so their attack is travelling even if they've leaked 85. Eden Park on October 10 is exactly the sort of fixture where that Wallabies backline could make it uncomfortable, though I could be wrong. Context matters: I'd rather see the All Blacks' defence numbers (70 conceded in three) hold up than bet on the Australian one holding together.

Nick's got the reading half right, I'd add the other half to it. The Wallabies conceding 85 across three matches while still putting up 114 tells you their games are opening up, they're winning (or losing) the shootout, not the arm wrestle. One win, two losses, but competitive in all three by the look of the numbers. I could be wrong, but that points to a side that backs itself with ball in hand and hopes the defence holds long enough. The All Blacks at 15 points from three, 121 for and 70 against, are doing it both ways, which is the scary part for anyone tipping an ambush. If the Wallabies want to blink first at Eden Park on October 10, they'd need to slow the tempo down, because a loose Test at that venue has only ever gone one way. Context matters here though - the table after three rounds is a small sample, and the November tours (England away for us, Wales away for them) will tell us more about both sides than this one night will.

  • Funny thing about the shootout talk. Eden Park has heard that song before. Aussies have been coming up here promising open rugby since the amateur days, and most of them went home sore. The Wallabies will run it because they have to with a leaky defence of 85 conceded, but the old rivalry karma at this ground doesn't blink easy. Young ones might be surprised how often history just quietly tips these ones 😉
Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

  • Loaded up on the ABs -13 at the TAB last Bledisloe Test there, landed easy. Aussie defence leaks, Eden Park streak keeps rolling. Same again for me 🔥💸

  • the wallabies scoring 114 in three tests and still losing twice tells you everything about where this one gets decided. they can run with anyone, it's the other end of the field where the 85 points came off. and Eden Park doesn't forgive that sort of leakiness, never has. back in my day the aussies used to arrive talking up open rugby and leave having shipped thirty-something, and the place hasn't changed its mood much since. young lot get excited by the shootout talk, but watch as long as I have and you'll learn the streak isn't luck, the ground just squeezes visitors. if new zealand get their set piece going early, that defence of australia's will start leaking again and the 121 points they've already put up this championship says they won't need asking twice 😄

  • MatchdayTillIDie nailed it tbh 🔥 114 points and two losses says it all... but nah I'm not fully asleep on this one. UncleAllDay's right, we never make it easy. Remember being at Eden Park years back when our lot nearly chucked one away in the last ten. Still gives me shivers 😱 the Wallabies have guts running it, and if our defence naps even one quarter like they did conceding 70, it gets twitchy fast. Still, three from three, 121 on the board, home turf... we blink last 💪🇳🇿
Heart with the team, head on pause.

  • Been along to Eden Park on Bledisloe nights since the amateur days, and the one thing that ground has always punished is a defence that gives you a sniff. Wallabies can score with anyone - 114 in three tests proves that, but coughing up 85 at the same time is how streaks get extended the hard way. Seen it all before, the crowd gets up and the leaks turn into a flood. 😄

  • FixIsInBeliever680 summed it up 👏 defence wins Bledisloe nights... still remember coaching the juniors the morning after a heartbreak at that ground 😅 ABs by plenty tho 🔥

  • Small sample though, three Tests each, and the Wallabies' 114 suggests they can trade blows. Merit says All Blacks, but Eden Park evenings have humbled better sides than this. Open game.
