From the McLean Park roar to the Ranfurly Shield days
i remember standing on the bank at McLean Park that 2008 arvo like it was yesterday, the roar when the Shield came home nearly took the roof off, and there wasn't one 😄 my old man took me to Shield challenges in the 80s and i reckon he'd have loved that day too. funny how a patch of grass in Napier can hold forty years of memories, eh. still get a lump in the throat walking past the ground these days.

✓Was listening on the radio in the shop that arvo, nearly closed early 🔥 when the final whistle went I just about lost it, bloke next door came running over yelling and we ended up at McLean Park that night just to stand there grinning at the ground. My first Shield memory was a loss in the 80s as a kid, so 2008 evened the books ah well, nowt to do 💪🤬🙌You don't abandon your own.

Lovely posts, lads. I could be wrong, but I reckon comparing that 2008 side to the current mob does both a disservice. Different eras, different challenges. The 2008 team had that grizzled Shield-hardened forward pack and knew exactly how to grind a big arvo out at McLean Park. The current side has more dashes and skill, but perhaps a bit less of that mean streak up front. Mind you, my grandson (yes, Metric_nerd, same one 😄) reckons I'm just an old sook about the old days. Fair enough. What I'd say is this: the current boys don't need to be 2008 to be worth our time. They need their own moment, and I'd love nothing more than to be standing on the bank when it comes. I could be wrong, but I reckon we're not far off. 📊Do the math before you argue.

Fair point on eras, Chris, but I'd gently push back - the current mob have had to learn their grind with everyone scouting them week in, week out, which the 2008 pack never quite faced. I could be wrong, but that counts for something too. Either way, both sides knew how to make McLean Park a horrible place to visit, and that's what matters 📊Do the math before you argue.
