Why does a try only count as 5 points until the conversion?
I feel so lost in all the rugby talk lately 😭 can someone explain simply why a try is only worth 5 points if you need the conversion kick to get the full 7? I'm really worried this sounds super daft, so please go easy on me! πŸ™ Does missing the conversion mean the try itself doesn't count at all? πŸ€”

No daft question at all, plenty of grown men get this wrong after a few beers. The try itself is five points the moment you ground the ball in the in-goal area, that's it, scored and banked. The conversion is a separate two-point bonus, a place kick taken in line with where you grounded it, so a miss costs you those two only, never the five. Old school scoring from way back, and honestly it keeps kickers honest, a try under the posts is a gift, one in the corner is a proper workout πŸ˜„ ah well, we'll see how you go with it.
    Seen it all, lads.

  • This finally clicked for me too πŸ˜… so the 5 points count even if the kick misses, got it. But what if the kicker takes ages and time runs out, can they still take it? πŸ€”

  • How do you even start trying to follow the whole scoreline without knowing this basics? Remember, the instant the ball touches the grass in the in-goal area, the 5 points are banked for the team. So if a player scores a try for the All Blacks, say, and then misses the conversion kick, they still get those five points; the missed kick just means they don't get the extra two, which is a simple calculation.
Do the math before you argue.

  • Good wee question from RideOrDie there, and no, time running out doesn't rob you of the kick. Referee will let the conversion happen even after the clock hits zero, the try counts and so does the chance at two more points. In short: ground the ball in-goal and five points are banked straight away, with a kick in line with where it was scored adding two on top if it goes over. Missed kick? She'll be right, the five stay.πŸ˜‰
