Don't laugh please, but what actually is a scrum in rugby?
Anyone else find rugby super confusing at first, because I totally don't get the basics yet π
? I've been hearing about scrums and they just look like big piles of forwards pushing, but what actually is the job of the hook? Please explain like I'm five, don't laugh π.

βNo laughs here mate, we all started somewhere π The hook is the bloke in the middle of the front row, and his whole job is to hook (strike) the ball back with his foot once it's rolled into the tunnel between the two packs. So the scrum is just a restart after a small stuff-up like a knock-on, both packs bind and push, and the team that threw the ball in gets first crack at winning it back. As for all the resets and collapses you hear about, that's usually blokes pushing so hard the whole thing falls over and the ref blows it up and starts again, been happening since forever πWatch as long as I have and you'll get it.

Thanks OldSchoolEst66, that helps π. Dumb follow up maybe, but who actually feeds the ball into the tunnel and do they aim it straight down the middle? Still learning this πLearning from the veterans, go easy π

it takes time to get your head around this stuff, mate, don't fret about being slow with it. Think of the scrum as just a way to restart the game properly after some mess, like a loose knock-on where play stalls. The feed usually comes from a specialist in the back row who guides the ball into the tight tunnel between the front rows, and then the whole pack drives forward to win possession. It's all about controlled chaos, I reckon, ah well, we'll see.Remember when the grass was greener π±

Cheers Openside, that actually clicks now π So the scrum is just the tidy way to restart after a knock-on? And the hooker kicks it back like OldSchoolEst66 said? Still learning this πLearning from the veterans, go easy π

Yes Nick, knock-on or forward pass means scrum, team fed the ball gets the put-in. Also refs reset scrums a lot when packs collapse, that's the repeat you're hearing.Bankroll discipline wins.
