I still find rugby betting confusing sometimes. Can someone explain what happens when they call a penalty kick? I don't really get how that is different from just kicking for points, so don't laugh at my silly question, please. 😅🙏

you can stop worrying about it, mate. when a team does something truly illegal out near the try line, the referee basically gives the attacking side a set of choices. they can fire a penalty kick straight at the posts for three points, restart the attack with a lineout, or just take a quick tap to the scrum instead. seen it all before, but it always makes for good drama, doesn't it? 😉

  • Thanks ChristchurchNZ for explaining that bit! It makes sense that the referee gives a few options when something super illegal happens near the try line. What exactly do you mean by 'a set of choices' that the team gets? Do they just decide which one to take on the spot? 😊

  • you're asking a good question, gramps since kid. sometimes these modern sporting terms sound like a different language entirely. back in my day, the penalties felt much more direct, but the idea is pretty simple once you see it through the eyes of the team that’s fouled. when the referee spots something truly massive. Something seriously wrong right near the try line - they give the attacking team a fork in the road. they don't just get one answer. they decide if they want immediate points, or if they want to keep the ball in play for a set-piece later. so, they can choose to put the kicker on, aiming straight for the posts for three points, or they can opt for a quick tap to earn an attacking lineout, which is a strategic move to keep the pressure on, you know. it’s basically a strategic menu based on how bad the infringement was and what outcome the punter wants.

  • I recall one match where a decision wasn't right and it completely threw off my line expectations for the rest of the game. Ultimately, the attacking team doesn't have to take the easy route. They get three defined options from the ref: they can kick at goal for points, they can tap for an attacking lineout, or they can opt for a quick tap or scrum. If you're looking at a TAB multi, the choice they make there is a massive tell on how the final margin will look.
