Right, been hearing whispers through a mate who knows a bloke on the fringes over there. Word is a certain Chiefs breakaway is coming off contract and there's been some quiet interest from Canberra about getting him across in time for the season. Nothing signed, nothing announced, probably nothingburger territory, but imagine him in gold at GIO Stadium cracking at the breakdown. That openside hole gets filled proper and suddenly the whole back row looks different. Take it for what it's worth, which might be about two bucks 😏

A mate of a mate of a bloke on the fringes, aye. Source on that, or are we just writing fiction now?

  • Even if it's just whispers, imagine that bloke pilfering ball all arvo at GIO Stadium 😍🔥 We've been screaming out for a genuine openside for years, get in!

  • GoTheDistance, I keep a spreadsheet of squad ages and contract chatter every season, and here's how I'd frame it depends how you count it. If the bloke in question is who most of us think it is, he'd be turning up in his prime window, maybe a year either side of 28, which for an openside is honestly the sweet spot. Fetch work holds up well into the early thirties, so the age risk is minimal. The logic stacks up too. A club that's thin at seven, with cap room after a few retirements, chasing an off-contract abrasive backrower from a conference rival is exactly the play a shrewd list manager makes. The scepticism I'd keep is on the source chain. A mate of a bloke on the fringes is how half the forum's transfer rumours start, and Super Rugby list moves rarely leak that early unless an agent wants them leaked. So I'd put it at maybe a fair dinkum chance rather than a sure thing, small sample though on the whispers so far.
    Numbers > vibes.

  • I could be wrong, but the sample size on these "quiet interest" rumours is pretty ordinary historically, and half the names we've chased through whispers over the years never even sat down with the club. BadBeatKing, your age table only matters if the bloke actually signs, aye? Still, if the Chiefs are genuinely letting an openside of that quality drift off contract, I'd want to know why before we pencil him in for pilfers at GIO.
Do the math before you argue.

  • Lost count of the big names we've "quietly chased" over the years who never got near a Brumbies jersey. Time will tell, eh. 😉
