How does ruck and maul actually work in simple terms?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but what's the actual difference between a ruck and a maul? I watch the Bunnings NPC and hear the commentators mix them up all the time 😅 I get the ball is on the ground in one and off it in the other, but how do you tell in real time? Go easy on me 🙏

No dumb question at all mate, even the commentators get it wrong. Simple version: a tackle happens, the ball's on the deck, players bind over it pushing for it, that's a ruck. If the ball carrier stays on his feet and gets held up, and players bind around him pushing, that's a maul. Real time trick I use, from my spot in the stands at Eden Park back in the day, just look at the ball. On the ground, ruck. In someone's hands, maul. And keep off the deck lads, going off your feet was a penalty in my day and it still is 😉

Watch as long as I have and you'll get it.

  • If the runner gets tackled but is still trying to run, is that still a maul 🤔 or does it turn into a ruck? 😅
Learning from the veterans, go easy 🙏

  • The defining factor is the carrier's position. If he remains upright while players bound, that's a maul. Ball actually touching the ground means a ruck.

  • That distinction is often lost when the action is moving fast, I’ll grant you that. Imagine a Bunnings NPC tackle where the runner goes down: the cluster of players binding immediately over that ball is the ruck, designed for rapid ball presentation. But if that same run-in results in a player being held up and driving forward while remaining on his feet, you’re looking at the structured power play of the maul.

  • Been watching this since the amateur days and the easiest way I ever heard it put was from an old loose forward at Forrester Park: feet or hands. In short: if the tackled player hits the turf and the ball's on the ground, players binding over it make a ruck; if he's held up on his feet with teammates bound around him, that's a maul. Stay on your feet and bind properly or the ref will ping you, same as he always has 😄
