Don't laugh, but what actually is a scrum and why do they push like that? πŸ˜… I've watched a few games with my mates and when play stops and everyone binds together I honestly have no idea what's going on. Also why does it happen after a knock-on, can someone explain simply? πŸ™

Don't laugh either but what does the hooker actually do in there? Is he the one who hooks the ball back with his foot? πŸ˜… Thanks to anyone who can explain simply πŸ™
    Dumb questions are my specialty.

  • Good on you for asking, no shame in it. Aye, the hooker is the fella in the middle of the front row who sticks a boot out and drags the ball back when the halfback feeds it into the tunnel, though these days it's more of a controlled strike than a wild hook. The whole scrum exists to restart play fairly after things like a knock-on, the packs bind and push to see who earns the ball. Watch as long as I have and you'll stop noticing the pushing and start noticing the ref muttering "crouch, bind, set" like a poem πŸ˜„
Been here longer than some have followed.

  • Simplest way to think of it is a restart after someone stuffs up, like a knock-on, the two packs bind and push and the ref just wants a fair feed and no early shove or collapsed front row. The halfback rolls the ball into the tunnel and the hooker strikes it back. Handy for a punter too, a team that owns its scrum feed keeps clean ball, which matters a lot when you're building a TAB multi on first try scorer.
Value over a big price πŸ’Έ
